SONG OF THE DAY: Sirah – “On To the Next”

Unexpected.? Sirah, the grime edgy rapper behind Skrillex “Bang-a-rang,” has been releasing a string of singles like “Up and Down,” “My City,” and “Motel Bible” that blended her tough flow with a bit of emotion over rough tracks that brought her points home.? “On To the Next” is a complete reversal (similar to the new Icona Pop’s “Just Another Night”) as it focuses solely on her emotional vulnerability and strength in leaving a bad relationship performed over a very accessible and commercial pop-feeling track.?? Before her hardcore fans yell sell-out, I would suggest they listen closely to what she is saying in her verses, they are just as cutting as her previous work, the music just softens it a bit, perhaps with the aim of crossing this song onto commercial radio.? Her lyrics are incredibly strong – with the line “funny what you fell in love is what you turns you off” being just one of the many highlights.? The fact the she can do both the pretty almost-sung chorus and the rapped verses without the need of a featured guest shows her versatility even further.? The video is worth watching for its unintended camp value and the gratuitous snake-as-penis imagery.?

INTERVIEW: BT (2013)

Producer, artist, and tech guru Brian Transeau stands alone as one of the most unique visionaries in the electronic dance music world. Spanning nearly twenty years, his music has reached the worlds of clubs, radio, TV, movies, and video games.? His new album A Song Across Wires is probably his most accessible to date, inspired by the current sounds of electronic dance music as filtered through his creative mind and rendered by his futuristic production techniques.

Ron Slomowicz: I have listened to your new album a couple of different times and it feels like I am at a festival, hearing all the big records at once – but really well-produced.
Brian Transeau (BT): Awesome, I really love hearing that. Honestly, it is the first time in years that I have been really inspired by dance music and I feel like this record is one that my fans have wanted me to make for years and I just wasn?t ready to. In this moment, I am deeply inspired by what is actually happening in dance music. It feels so good to hear that, I feel the same way and I can?t wait to share this record with my fans and peers.

SONG OF THE DAY: Bart B More – “The Napoleon Saga”

Who knew that KITT was French? Bart B More is back on Skrillex’s label OWSLA with “The Napoleon Saga,” two inspired electro tracks. “Napoleon” is a full-frontal dancefloor assault with aggressive electro, stuttered/syncopated loops, sick buildups, a touch of big room house, and a melody line incredibly similar to the Knight Rider theme (you know, the one Panjabi MC used for “Mandian Te Bach Te”). This new interpretation is insanely powerful to the point of being emotional jarring. “Napoleon” is memorable and aggressive, and perhaps that the reason for the title. “Saga” uses some of the same elements of Napoleon but is structured more like a track for an artist to write a topline to, rather than a full-on club jam. Close your eyes and it could be the next single from Rye Rye. Big room DJs should jump on “Napoleon” immediately (wow, that sounds inappropriate), as it will be an instant floor-response track.
