SONG OF THE DAY: tyDi ft Kerli – “Something About You”

Well, not 10 minutes after I posted “Can’t Control the Kids” by Kerli as Song of the Day, I got a message from a friend asking if I had heard the new song she did with tyDI.? Since I loved “Glow in the Dark” so much, I clicked over immediately.? “Something About You” is a progressive house track with elements of stadium and a stronger-than-normal kick (with some cool reverse kick transitions). The track has a mysterious feeling to it, almost eerie, in the way that it is subtle yet sucks you in.? Maybe it’s an element of dark prettiness, sounding more like Kerli’s first album ‘Love is Dead’ rather than her more uplifting recent EP ‘Utopia.’? “Something About You” isn’t as instant as tyDi tracks like “Fire and Load” or “Nothing Really Matters,” but I have a feeling that it will grow with a few listens.

SONG OF THE DAY: Kerli – “Can’t Control the Kids”

Throwing hearts… I first heard that term when the Nervo twins played Nashville and were describing the crowd response to their last festival set. If you watch live videos, you will definitely see it as well. It’s also the response that Kerli gets from the moon children, her fans around the world. “Can’t Control the Kids” is her song for them – because she, like almost everyone else, realizes that in this world of infinite technology, they can do whatever they dream – with no barriers or limits. Over a high-energy, glitchy electro beat, she sings about trouble and bad influences, but in the end it’s all about showing love. With the refrain “put your hearts up,” she expresses the full meme and on first listen you will realize that resistance is futile. If you haven’t yet purchased her ‘Utopia’ EP, here’s another great song that should convince you to do so.

SONG OF THE DAY: Alex Metric & Jacques Lu Cont ft Malin – “Safe With You”

Easily one of the best records of the year, “Safe With You” is one that might not grab you on first listen. The perfect blend of hard and soft – the song combines aggressive electro beats, cool progressive synths, and gorgeous vocals courtesy of Malin Dahlstrom (from indie act Niki and the Dove). The song is a collaboration of synthpop/electro producers Alex Metric and Jacques LuCont (Stuart Price), and you can definitely tell that it is a true collaboration with elements from both clearly evident. The first time I heard it, my immediate reference was iiO “Rapture” for the way it took a progressive-leaning track and gave it a pop vibe without becoming cheesy in any way. It’s also one of those rare records that grow on you every time, with no burn factor whatsoever. The video is quite brilliant as well, focusing on an iceskating duo superimposed upon itself. The symbolism of being reliant on someone else in order to perform such complex routines requires that you trust and feel safe having your life in their hands. The visual result is as pretty and layered as the song itself. With massive support from DJs across the hoard (Tiesto featured it at Creamfields) and a plethora of remixes (a favorite being by Andi Durrant and Steve More), watch for “Safe With You” to be a massive hit when released commercially later this month.
