SONG OF THE DAY: Nom De Strip & Hatiras – “Nippleodeon”

Ah, the glorious WTF track… In the constant stream of tracks released on a weekly basis, it takes a special or WTF (what the fuck) track to stand out and make you notice.? It’s not that “Nippleodeon” is completely original – there are elements of ’90s techno, late ’80s industrial, glitch, and electro mixed with diva vocal samples, handclaps, and horn loops. The way that all these parts are seamlessly blended is what elevates it from a mash-up to a truly original track. ?Nippleodeon is for the big rooms what Arcader’s “Pillowtalk” is for the techno-heads.? That the title is quite fun to say just makes it even more stupid fresh.

SONG OF THE DAY: Joan Reyes & Victor Magan ft Moises Modesto – “Heart of Glass”

Part of following clubland is keeping an eye on music from around the world.? Starting to buzz in Spain is this new vocal houser from Spanish DJ/Producers Joan Reyes and Victor Magan.? The song caught my eye for two reasons – first because of how great Joan’s track with Amba Shepherd, “Perfect Crime,” was and and secondly, the thought of how cool a male vocal cover of a Blondie track would be.? To my very happy surprise, it’s an original song written by singer Moises Modesto with a fully-realized verse and chorus (a rarity these days in EDM records) over a track which blends a melodic piano drop with tough, but not obnoxiously aggressive electro production in the chorus.? The only ’80s/cover vibe comes from a synth line that bears a striking resemblance to Bronski Beat “Smalltown Boy” (or September “Cry For You” for those too young to remember the original). “Heart of Glass” is a solid vocal club track that could easily find its way into crossing over to radio.

SONG OF THE DAY: Kid Noize – “KDNZ EP”?

A guy wearing a monkey mask making ’90s-sounding electronic dance music.? Honestly, it took a few listens to convince me that this was a serious project and not just some spoof of Daft Punk thrown out there as a joke.? Could it be “Kid” Alex (aka Boyz “Noize”) having a laugh?? Was the debut track “Eisbaer” supposed to have a creepy Otto Von Wernherr vibe?? Listening to the EP, the music definitely fits the current ’90s flashback trend with “KDNZ” sounding like an 808 State/Daft Punk minimal/downbeat techno hybrid.? The spoken vocals of “Signs” beg the satire question, giving it a bit of an indulgent/out there Einsturzende Neubauten feel over ’90s techno beats and an oddly-fitting dubstep breakdown.? While this really isn’t music for dancing, it’s definitely an interesting listen and would be cool chillout music for Dieter from Sprockets’ afterparty.
