SONG OF THE DAY: Cedric Gervais ft Coco – Through the Night

Genreblending in EDM is definitely making things more interesting. Avicii got universal praise for bringing country to the dance floor and Cedric is taking it a step further by bringing in a modern iteration of jump blues. The organic vibe feels like he could actually even be using real instruments. The track is energetic and will move a dance floor without any of the rote EDM clich?s that predominate at the moment. There is one drum fill that comes in where you would expect it to go all “generic big room,” but it doesn’t, and that’s a good thing. If you insist on the big room sound, remixes by Chris Lake, CID, and Mednas do the trick – all using vocals, with the Chris Lake mix standing out for keeping so much of the original vibe. Vocalist Coco sounds good especially when expressing universal thoughts like “I wonder what you look like in the morning light.” The video is worth checking out since the beachside bonfire party is a much more desirable destination than the last time Cedric rode alone with a girl in a car (the “Sprit in My Life” video).

SONG OF THE DAY: Cahill – Sunshine

Summery dance pop with the perfect name. The trio of Anton Powers, Scott Rosser, and Tim Condran, better known as Cahill, are having such a great summer with incredible remixes of Clean Bandit, Ellie Goulding, Ferreck Dawn & Redondo, and Charli XCX that it makes sense that they would channel that energy into an original production. Following the nu-House vibe, they’ve covered the 1999 soulful track “Sunshine” by Black Science Orchestra and Alison David with a beach-friendly, sexy house production that is light and airy while full of soul. The horns and strings interplay so wonderfully that we can almost forgive them for the long wait since their brilliant anthem “Feel the Love.” While they clearly focus on their record label 3Beat and an insane remix schedule, imagine how wonderful a Cahill album of original productions would sound. They have a knack for reworking lost classics like Oris Jay’s “Trippin,” Apollonia 6 “Sex Shooter,” and of course “Sunshine,” that letting them go crate digging and exploring could yield even more masterpieces. Making this a free download is truly a generous gift as well.

SONG OF THE DAY: Polina – Fade to Love

A reader of the blog asked me why I never wrote up the song “Fade to Love,” since I am such of fan of Polina- having written up her collaborations with L.A. Riots (Kamikaze) and Mobin Master vs Tate Strauss (Dreams). The simple answer is that I didn’t know about it. Produced by Alex Gaudino, “Fade to Love” is a modern synth-pop track where Polina channels a Teri Nunn vibe with her dual personality vocal (stronger, almost spoken verse, with a pretty sung chorus). The vocal production is exceptional as the bridge features a male vocal mirroring hers- though it could possibly be her voice lowered an octave. On first listen, the chorus “Fade to Love” sounded so familiar that I thought this song was a cover. After a frantic Google search trying to source the lyrics, my good friend Jason pointed out that I was confusing it with Bryan Ferry’s “Slave to Love.” For club use, Russian duo Zeskullz toughen it up with a bit of electro, while Betablock3r smooths it out with a summery pop feel. The video will inspire you to get your car headlights rewired so you can have a disco lightshow backdrop, though hopefully you won’t be moved to destroy the vehicle afterwards. Kudos to Polina for her debut solo single as the sole artist (and not featured or versus). If this is what she sounds like on her own, here’s hoping that an album is in the works as well…
