SONG OF THE DAY: Lee Dagger & Inaya Day – Shelter Me

Unexpected.? When you see Inaya Day’s name on a record, the first though is full-on diva singing, wailing, and screaming. “Shelter Me” is a much softer and prettier side of Inaya; you can definitely tell it is her singing but it is unlike most of her big house records.? The collaboration with Lee Dagger is in the current big room EDM style – pretty synth dropouts for vocals with banging electro beats for the festival kids. The contrast of soft and hard works rather well. For club consumption, there is a large set of remixes of various styles (house, electro, dubstep, nu-house, festival, progressive) from Alex Preston, Bimbo Jones, DDei & Estate, Funky Junction (with Ariano Kina & Marco Bruzzano), Killerpunkers, Giuseppe D, Looney B & Clemens Brock, M-Series, Soneec, and Wawa – so just about any kind of club DJ can find something that fits their set.??

Borgore Interview 2014

This is one of those rare interviews where I just felt nervous. Just as Skrillex moved from a metal/hardcore band to producing dubstep, Borgore has followed a similar path. The big difference is the persona/character Borgore plays. When you listen to his music and watch his videos, the sexual debauchery is epic. The question: is that really Borgore in real life, or is it a satirical character ? la Borat? Talking to Borgore, he is surprisingly down to earth and quite lively, nothing like the party ringleader he plays during his live shows. His new album #NewGoreOrder released this week sees him stepping out side the realms of dubstep and exploring the realms of trap and electro while keeping his unique sound front and center.

SONG OF THE DAY: Example – Take Me As I Am

Dance music is normally a singles genre rather than an albums genre. The big DJ/producers are always banging out the big tracks, but aside from artists like Disclosure, Robyn, Afrojack, etc. – the artist album is usually not a focus. One artist who bucks that trend is Example. His just released album ‘Live Life Living” has already spawned three massive singles (“All the Wrong Places,” “Kids Again,” and “One More Day”), and the new one “Take Me As I Am” is even stronger. Starting off with a simple string backing, Example sings in a quite self-deprecating fashion and admits his flaws. The intensity gradually builds until it goes full-on stadium techno – massive-sounding big- and break-beats with massive energy. The vocals alternate between him singing and rapping the lyrics. The dynamic changes make this one of the most interactive and energetic tracks of recent memory. Since this year seems to be all about channeling the ’90s, the inspiration source “Take Me As I Am” is clearly The Prodigy, with elements of “Jericho” and “Firestarter” sprinkled throughout the track. Those of in the US will have to wait until next month for the release, and hopefully a tour of the States will be planned as well since Example is known for his energetic live shows.
