INTERVIEW: Kerli (2013)

Kerli isn’t an artist, she is a force of nature.? The Estonian pop princess recently released her Utopia EP where she leaves behind the darkness and enters the light with a set of uplifting dancefloor gems.? Her songs “Zero Gravity” and “The Lucky Ones” received massive club play for good reason – engaging lyrics sung with emotion over energetic beats.? With her moon children following her, she brings love and energy wherever she goes.

DJ Ron Slomowicz: Congratulations on being #1 with ?The Lucky Ones.? This is your second time, how does it feel to be so embraced by the club community?
Kerli: Thank you. It feels good but it is not about the charts, it’s about the music and the people.

SONG OF THE DAY: tyDi ft Christina Novelli – “Fire and Load”

An inspired pairing… “Fire & Load” unites producer tyDi (last heard with Kerli on the epic “Glow in the Dark”) and Christina Novelli (singer on “Concrete Angels” which was one of the best tracks of 2012). A straight-ahead progressive beat anchors a dark pop melody featuring great keyboard work and some dramatic tempo changes.? Speaking of drama, the repeated line “don’t you let me go,” sung with heartfelt emotion by Christina, could be sampled on its own and be the basis of an amazing trance track.? For those wanting a harder mix, Ryan Mendoza pumps up the track with harder electro beats while keeping the vocals intact, not an easy feat.? “Fire and Load” is just proof that when great people work together, wonderful music is bound to follow.

SONG OF THE DAY: tyDi ft Kerli – “Glow In the Dark”

Australian dj/producer tyDi and Estonian alternative pop princess Kerli make for an inspired pairing. Here, tyDi?s subtly mellow and downbeat progressive base track would stand as a great instrumental on its own and might even be possibly stronger if it were done in an acoustic style. A dropout bridge before its chorus is especially moving. Kerli’s vocals sound great and float effortlessly and convey emotion without being overdone. The lyrics are uplifting but not cheesy. When track and vocals combine, “Glow in the Dark” makes for some incredible pop music. It is definitely commercial- friendly but has enough substance that hardcore EDM heads will still like it. It may not grab you on the first listen, but given a chance you will be singing along before you know it. DJs looking for a harder electro should pick up Ryan Mendoza’s pumped up mix.
