SONG OF THE DAY: Dani Deahl and Animale – “Thunderbolt”

Chicago’s in the house, literally. I make no secret that I am a fan of Dani Deahl – for her productions, mashups, DJ sets, and blogs. Teaming up with fellow Chicagoan Animale, they unleash the spicy electro of “Thunderbolt,” on Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak label. With the double dropouts, the track that comes immediately comes to mind is Steve’s own “Beatdown,” except instead of going trap/moombahton, the military-styled drumbeat leads to a pretty synth-line that isn’t dissimilar to the Art of Noise classic “Moments in Love.” It’s not as obvious as the recent Katy Perry single “Dark Horse,” but if you listen closely and have ever vibed to a Quiet Storm broadcast on the radio, you will definitely hear it. DJs should jump on this track, as well as the appropriately-titled “A DJ is Not an iPod” by Tocadisco, which are both featured on Dim Mak’s ‘New Noise Volume 5.’

INTERVIEW: Dyro (2013)

A highlight of the Amsterdam Dance Event is always finding the rising talent.? There is even a special day for ADE Next, highlighting aspiring producers/DJs learning the trade.? Dyro made the jump from attending the Next panel to being on the Next panel in the span of year. ? His track “Metaphor” received massive support from David Guetta and “Sky High,” his track with Amba Shepherd, was picked up by Strictly Rhythm.? Add to that remixes of high profile artists like Katy Perry, Afrojack, and Example, and you will hear why 2012 was such a good year for Dyro and why he is a rising star to watch for.

RS: How was the Revealed party last night?
Dyro: It was amazing; there was a really energetic crowd. It was different for me to play to a crowd that was really into the music. There was a good flow and I really enjoyed it.

REVIEW: Ellie Goulding – ‘Halcyon’

Who is Ellie Goulding, really? I mean, Wikipedia tells us she’s a 25 year-old soprano from London. That really doesn’t say much, though, it’s just facts. It doesn’t convey a personage, not the way the act of expression that is music can. We also know that Ellie Goulding has been riding the same song, rather successfully, for almost three years now, and for some reason “Lights” never really gets old. That’s one song, however, and can you really establish the identity of a singer from one song? While “Lights” has been introducing Ellie to fans across the globe and sneaking into the pop mainstream like a slow-moving ninja, it wasn’t really a fantastic representation of her 2010 album of the same name, nor is it a calling card to what her new album, Halcyon, contains. “Lights” is what allowed her to create Halcyon though, and it is an influence on what some of the tracks aim to achieve. But at the end of the day, who is Ellie Goulding, really?
