SONG OF THE DAY: LA Riots & Polina – Kamikaze

As a DJ/blogger who usually filters through 300 tracks a week, it is sometimes easy to miss a gem during a quick preview. Unfortunately, that was the case when I first heard “Kamikaze” a few weeks ago. Released on Tiesto’s Musical Freedom label, the collaboration between Daniel LeDisko (LA Riots) and chanteuse Polina starts off a bit restrained before the dropdown to vocals and the build to big room electro. When you quickly scan through the track, it doesn’t scream for attention. However, at the suggestion of a fellow DJ, I went back and listened to it from start to finish and it really blew me away. Polina is a singer/songwriter (or what industry people call a topline writer), but with her recent releases she is becoming more and more of an artist, or how I described her- a chanteuse, in the vein of a Sia, Lana del Rey, or Sian (of Kosheen). The strength of her lyrics and performance transcend what you hear on a normal club track. La Riot also steps up his game with a surprise bit of trap after the second break which is raw and a bit disturbing, yet perfectly suited to the vocal themes and yes, the title. DJs who might have missed this when it was released earlier this month should go to Beatport and buy the download. If you are a fan of dance records with darker themes and dramatic vocal performances, like say “Summertime Sadness” or “Titanium,” this “Kamizake” would be a great addition to your mp3 player.

SONG OF THE DAY: Five Knives – The Rising

Living in Nashville, the trio Five Knives have been on my radar with their incredibly strong string of tracks – Vive Le Roi, Messin’ With My Mind, and The Future. Their sound blends the more aggressive EDM genres – electro, chainsaw, trap, and drum & bass with a rock vibe and the powerful rasp of lead singer Anna Worstell. Imagine a mix of Knife Party, Die Antwoord, Krewella, and Republica to get an idea. Listening to their tracks, it should come as no surprise that they caught a big buzz at SxSW 2013 and have been playing bigger events around the country ever since. Their breakout single “The Rising” is starting to make even more noise in clubs thanks to a plethora of remixes. With so many to choose from, it’s hard to decide on a favorite, but the mixes by Xilent, Dave Aud?, and Damn Kids find their way into my playlists the most often.

SONG OF THE DAY: Justin Michael and Digital Freq – Follow You

Mixing rock and dance always leads to unique results.? Listening to Justin Michael’s last track “Young Forever,” you could hear the influence of prog-rock and a touch of The Killers in there.? For the new single “Follow You,” he is mining the world of grunge as if he was producing a Pearl Jam album for the dancefloor.? The results are an interplay of hard electro beats and sensitive, but powerful, male vocals with a rock feel that is rarely heard on the dancefloor.? The two sounds in reality should probably not work together so well but they do. Listening to Justin’s recent work, I think it might be time for him to team with a full-on rock band, like what Steve Aoki did with Linkin Park, and do a collaborative project highlighting both of their unique sounds.
