SONG OF THE DAY: Dave Aude ft Andy Bell – Aftermath (Here We Go)

If you’ve ever seen Dave Aude spin live (which I strongly recommend), you will notice that he is definitely a DJ’s DJ – using three decks to mix acapellas and tracks live to remix on the fly.? This same idea of reinvention is evident in many of his recent productions and remixes where he has embraced ’90s Nu-House elements with his own unique spin.? Working with one of his personal idols, Andy Bell of Erasure, he has taken it a step further – bringing in ’80s synths with ’90s synth-pop flavors to a thoroughly modern 2014 electropop production.? “Aftermath (Here We Go)” sounds like he has rebuilt one of the best songs from Erasure’s ‘Chorus’ album for today’s dance floors.? Andy’s vocals are as beautiful as ever and the lyrics are as catchy as any of Erasure’s biggest hits.? Listening to the song over and over, I keep imagining how amazing it would be for Dave Aude to go into the studio and produce Erasure’s next album.? When Vince hears how good this song is, it could just possibly happen.

SONG OF THE DAY:? Motez – Promise Me EP

Last week, I wrote up three songs that essentially took lyrics from ’90s R&B songs and sampled them over a nu-House track. Not that I would call this lazy, but I find it more interesting when the vocals are effected, changed, or morphed into something new and different – like what Le Youth has done with Cassie on “Cool” or TLC on “Dance With Me.”? Rising Aussie producer Motez is set to unleash two tracks – the speed garage-inflected “Bodyrock” and the groovy piano house of “Promise Me.”? I kept listening to “Promise Me” and the lyrics sounded so familiar until it hit me that he’d taken two lines of Ashanti’s part in Nelly’s 2008 minor hit “Body On Me” – effected it to change the gender – and respliced it.? The results are quite wonderful and make for some sexy, grinding house music.? Both tracks on the EP are incredibly strong and with his string of remixes and bootlegs, I have a feeling that we are going to be hearing a lot from Motez.

SONG OF THE DAY: Happy Enemies – Hood Anthem

Last week while at the Winter Music Conference, I asked several producers how they name their instrumental tracks.? Since many said it was based on the spirit or emotion, I guess it is time for me to make a trip to Israel – or the “Hood” of the Happy Enemies.? The Israeli duo have channelled the energy of classic hard-hitting euro tracks like 666 “Amokk” and Sash “Intercontinental Invaders” and added the deeper, moody breaks that are currently de rigeur.? The contrasts makes both elements even stronger.? Add in a triplet and broken beat passages to mix things up and the constant changing beats make “Hood Anthem” one of the freshest-sounding bangers of the year so far.? The fact that it is a free download from their Soundcloud makes it even more enticing, as does the fact that their next release is coming soon on Armada.
