SONG OF THE DAY: David Guetta ft Sam Martin – Lovers on the Sun

After a series of big room club bangers (Shot Me Down, Blast Off), David Guetta gets back into the pop vibe and releases a track aimed directly at commercial radio. Listening to this country & western electronica song through a few times, it sounds more like an Avicii track than a Guetta track. Since Avicii is listed as a co-producer (along with Giorgio Tuinfort & Frederic Riesterer), that really doesn’t come as that big of surprise except that the track really does feels like a mashup of Avicii’s nu-country album tracks and his stadium/progressive-house singles released prior. Basically, if you are a fan of Tim Bergling’s work, as most EDM lovers are, “Lovers on the Sun” will be an instant favorite. Sam Martin contributes a great vocal performance, elevating the track to feel like an epic theme song for a Quentin Tarantino movie. Listening to the campy dance rock of Sam’s band Con Bro Chill, you will really see the diverse range of his talent. Watch for a huge pack of club remixes which are no doubt forthcoming and probably a big commercial placement as well.

SONG OF THE DAY: Trevor Simpson ft Keznamdi – Watching You

When different genres collide, interesting collaboration arise. Listening to Keznamdi’s music, you hear his Jamaican/reggae roots as he sings over guitar-based tracks. This vibe, combined with the commercial electro sounds of respected mixshow DJ/producer Trevor Simpson makes “Watching You” stand out from the rest. The uplifting lyrics about a higher spirit watching and encouraging you to be a good person is a pleasant change from the party-centered focus of most EDM tracks. After a set of tracks about bouncing, this kind of thoughtful inspiration is a pleasant change. The original version is electro, with the Jamie Stewart and Pink Panda mixes making it even more festival-friendly. Drum and bass heads will rejoice for the slamming Lokey Crash interpretation. Eddie Amador embraces an old school house vibe, channeling Brothers in Rhythm and taking you on a journey – either short for 9 minutes or long for 11 minutes. Peter Brown splits the difference with an old school bassline buoyed by modern production. While not the most club-friendly interpretation, the beloved tiara girl Julissa Veloz explores lounge, piano house, live drums, and different synth lines for a creative mix unlike anything we’ve heard in a long time. All-in-all, it’s a solid set of diverse remixes that translate a creative collaboration to a variety of dance floors.

SONG OF THE DAY (SUNDAY FUNDAY): Martha Wash – I’m Not Coming Down

Everyone loves Martha Wash. From her start as a backup singer for Sylvester to her classic with the Weather Girls “It’s Raining Men” and more than 30 years of club anthems, Martha is beloved in gay clubland as a legendary diva. For 2014, she is back with “I’m Not Coming Down” a house record that shows both the soft and powerful side to her voice. She can sing but she can also sang (as is the proper idiom for her unmatched vocal prowess.) Surely to be featured at every circuit party this summer, It comes as no surprise that it is flying up the Billboard Club Chart and set to reach the pinnacle any day now. One sure sign of how much she is loved by clubland is the sheer volume of remixes with more than 20 different ones currently floating around (Rosabel, Tony Moran, Danny Diggz, DJ Ting, Gustavo Scorpio, Phil B & Leo Frappier, John Le Page & Brian Cua, Todd Terry, Ranny, Alex Acosta, Guy Scheiman, C-Rod, Deep Influence, Giangi Cappai, James Anthony, Wayne G, Mauro Mozart, Guy Scheiman, Albert Cabrera, John Lepage, Gustavo Scorpio, Phil B & Frappier.) As the most remixed record of the year (aside from Cher’s “Take It Like a Man,”) it’s a good thing that we are in a digital age because there is no telling how many cd singles would need to be released to cover all the remixes and dubs. If perchance you’re a dj and can’t find a suitable mix among those, there is even a sick electro bootleg mashup with Showtek. Having worked with Martha several times over the years, she is also a joy to perform with and always has a fun sense of humor. Evidence of this is the video for “I’m Not Coming Down” which is clearly a tongue-in-cheek spoof of the 90s NuHouse meme with her updating the classic “Give It To You” video with hot shirtless men dancing all around her.
