SONG OF THE DAY (SUNDAY FUNDAY): Ariana Grande ft Zedd – Break Free

The Nickelodeon star turned pop princess is gradually growing up, with the edgy and sexy (for her) duet with Iggy Azalea crossing over to become her first pop hit. Time for her to hit the clubs with a full-on EDM track. While she has had club remixes in the past (“Right There,” “Baby I,” “The Way”), this is her first full-on original dance production, courtesy of Zedd. It sounds pretty much like you would expect, a very pop production with excellent vocals (comparisons to early Mariah Carey have been abundant) and so many catchy hooks that you would think Zedd wrote this for Katy Perry instead. With the radio success of “Problems” and the recent Zedd collaborations, this will no doubt get massive success and probably lead to even more major collaborations for Zedd. Flashback to when BT worked with ‘N Sync, we can expect a lot more of that over the next few months.

SONG OF THE DAY: Beauriche – Every Woman

Coming from Funkerman’s Can You Feel It label, Dutchman Beauriche has been having fun putting his own twist on classic rave/techno? with tracks like “1986” (Latour’s “People Are Still Having Sex” over Hall and Oates “I Can’t Go For That”)? and a really funky mix of “Dominator” by Human Resource.? For “Every Woman,”? he reworks the Chaka Khan/Whitney Houston classic “I’m Every Woman” over what could have been an early ’90s Clivilles & Cole or David Morales track.? This probably started as a bootleg he did which just took on a life of his own.? The majority of the vocals are an ad-lib looped with just two lines of the chorus used in the breakdown.? It’s absolutely brilliant, and with all the love for Whitney’s classics, this will find love across many generations with the youngsters loving Nu-House and those who have been around long enough? to remember the original Chaka Khan or Whitney’s version from the Bodyguard soundtrack or it’s magnificent Every Woman’s House/Club Mix II.? Highly recommended.

SONG OF THE DAY: JS16 & Erkka – Girls On Film

The Duran Duran classic gets a fresh update. Finnish producers JS-16 (well known for “Stomp to My Beat” and for working with Darude on the classic “Sandstorm”) and Erkka team up to literally go back to the future. The track is a mix of classic industrial and modern electro, or what Front 242 would be doing if they were working with Knife Party. There’s a hook which sounds like a sample replay of “Welcome to Paradise.” The stuttered synths are the sonic equivalent of a strobe light, probably inspiration by the photography which is the subject of the original song lyrics. With every listen, another element stands out of the brilliantly multilayered production. This is the kind of leftfield track that could end up on a movie soundtrack and end up being an international pop hit.
