SONG OF THE DAY: Danny Dove ft Susie Ledge – “Goodbye”

There’s quickly becoming a huge catalog of progressive/stadium house tracks that all sound pretty much the same – as if the labels told every producer to copy that last one by Avicii/Swedish House Mafia. Thankfully, there are tracks like “Goodbye” that avoid devolving to the just-add-cheese formula. Danny Dove’s progressive house track is anthemic and pretty with sweeping pads, a squelchy synth hook, and an uplifting energy that comes from grooves rather than banging beats.? Singer/songwriter Susie Ledge adds her emotional blue-eyed soul to the somber lyrics, elevating the track even further.? DJs requiring a more aggressive mix will reach for the?Francesco Diaz & Young Rebels take which toughens the track up, teasing with a retro-ish trance pop hook before exploding into progressive electro beats.? Fans of the big vocal records of Armin van Buuren and Markus Schulz should definitely hunt this one down.

SONG OF THE DAY: Alex Gaudino ft JRDN – “Playing With My Heart”

Pulling a Guetta?? That’s quickly becoming slang for a DJ/producer going commercial by enlisting the help of big name r&b/hip-hop talent for a bigtime crossover.? That’s not necessarily the case here as Gaudino’s biggest club/crossover hits (“Destination Unknown,” “I’m In Love,” “What a Feeling”) have all added a pop topline to a clubworthy track.? Rather than go for theatrics with an international superstar, Alex has discovered a gem in Canadian idol competitor Ralph Jordan Croucher (aka JRDN). ?Possessing a voice capable of silky soulful singing and a dynamic rap flow, he elevates Alex’s solid electropop track to radio crossover. ? It’s of comparable quality to the best singles of Taio Cruz and Jason Derulo. ? Since the original is so straight-up pop (and that’s not a bad thing), there will no doubt be aggressive club remixes coming up soon. If someone just takes the verse lines “Playing With My Heart, Can’t Stop the Bleeding” and effects that over glitchy electro – it will be a floorfiller for sure.? With “Playing With My Heart” and his last single with Taboo, “I Don’t Wanna Dance,” as teasers, Alex Gaudino’s new album Doctor Love will definitely be the buzz of WMC upon its anticipated release in March.

SONG OF THE DAY: BXXX – “Lies”

When I first heard “Lies” by BXXX, I instantly referenced Fake Blood’s “All In the Blink” for the ’70s influence.? Rather than being influenced by ’70s pop like The Alan Parsons Project or Toto, “Lies” sound more like a track from a concept album by a ’70s progressive rock band.? This makes sense as BXXX (pronounced Bronx) score films about nightlife.? Starting with a radio DJ intro dedicating the song to lonely girls, the track feels like a cross between the recent Burns single “Lies” and the mellower tracks of deadmau5, with a touch of Madeon.? At just over two minutes, not much commitment is needed and the male vocals extolling the virtues of never sleeping float as a laconic counterpoint the prog rock-influenced, lounge-y electronic grooves.? The NSFW video feels like a modern take of Girls Gone Wild except with hipster/club kid party girls instead of spring breakers. BXXX will be quite an interesting project to watch as it develops.
