SONG OF THE DAY: The Angry Kids – “We Could Be Lions”

My favorite songs from the Angry Kids so far have been their male vocal records with a somber feel, like “Wouldn’t It Be Good” (an updated version of the ’80s cult classic by Nik Kershaw) and “Annie Taylor” (EDM collaboration with The Lives of Famous Men).? So when I heard “We Could Be Lions,” it kind of took me by surprise.? My immediate reference for production style were the?’90s New Order offshoot bands Revenge and Electronic – both synthpop that had a bit of self-deprecation and, yes, a bit of a somber tone.? It is definitely 2013-sounding, but the vibe and some of the instrumentation is definitely inspired by the ’90s. Yet the female vocals and lyrics are optimistic and uplifting, contrasting the darker tone of the music.? The singer isn’t credited, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it was fellow Canadian Kreesha Turner or even Mutya from the original Sugababes lineup.? While not a primetime club floorfiller, “We Could Be Lions” would sound great on radio but even better as the soundtrack for the pivotal scene of a teen coming-of-age movie.?

SONG OF THE DAY: Cosmic Gate – “So Get Up”

Surprised.? That was my honest reaction when I heard this new track from Cosmic Gate, because when I think of the German duo, what comes to mind is gorgeous and lush, epic trance.?? You will recognize the vocal parts of “So Get Up” immediately, as it is an update of the Underground Sound of Lisbon classic.? The track is the kind of aggressive electro that goes over massive at festivals and big room clubs.? It feels like a complete departure from the singles of their last album – “Wake Your Mind,” “Calm Down,” and “Be Your Sound,”? but when you listen to it next to their recent track “Storm Chaser” it feels like the next track in the progression to a harder sound.? It’s just an example of why they’ve lasted nearly 15 years in the EDM world while others have come and gone, they are able to adjust to the environment but keep their signature vibe in place.? “So Get Up” also marks the launch of their new label Wake Your Mind, which is being distributed through Armada Music.?

SONG OF THE DAY: Rivaz – “#1 (Colors)”?

When you get a track as epic and beautiful as Rivaz “Colors,” you just know there will be a vocal version coming.?? The track has been buzzing since Winter Music Conference, and when we first heard the uplifting and euphoric track, we had flashbacks to the first time we heard “Children” or “Sunchyme.”? A major record at Ibiza this summer, vocalist Corrine does the topline duty, singing about her personal empowerment being a desirable woman standing out from the crowd of women out there.? Yeah, that’s kind of elevating the lyrical theme, but let’s just go with that.? Corrine sounds like a cross between Rihanna and the singer from Karmin- with a touch of Bebe Rexha.? For a tougher tribal take with a bit more of a big room electro vibe, check out Robbie Rivera’s remix. While on the Rivaz tip, be sure to check out two other tracks he did this summer, “Tell Me Twice” with Benny Benassi and Heather Bright, as well as his remix of “Boom Boom” by Ray Foxx and Rachel K Collier.
