SONG OF THE DAY: Tom Trago ft Breach – “True Friends”

Here’s an inspired mash of sounds – early ’90s Detroit techno with a bit of disco house. Dutch producer Tom Trago previews his forthcoming album ‘The Light Fantastic” with this modern throwback vocoder track, “True Friends.” Collaborating with Ben Westbeech, aka Breach, the guy behind the summer jam “Jack,” it’s a wonderful mix of various sounds with a subtly groovy and sexy vibe overlayed with cadenced vocals reminiscent of Outsiders/Amanda Wilson “Keep the Fire Burning.” The video is kind of dark, yet fun at the same way, and we’re always happy to see the effective deployment of mimes to express emotions. If you like “True Friends,” be sure to check out “Two Together,” that Tom Trago did with Steffi.

SONG OF THE DAY (SUNDAY FUNDAY): Filly – “Hung Like a Donkey”

With Martin Garrix “Animal” and Ylvis “What Does the Fox Say,” there is obviously an animal trend on the rise. Since these things always happen in threes, UK pop tart Filly (the girl behind “Drip Drop” a few years back) might just have a big viral hit with this ode to well-endowed men. A slight digression here to say that this kind of topic matter is better handled in a woman’s voice and comes off a lot more funny, rather than the desperate-sounding (and borderline racist) like the “Black From the Waist Down” by Albert Kick and Jason Rene track which has been floating around for a few months. Back to “Donkey,” Filly is having fun in her tarty tone rapping and singing about well, you know. It’s kinda obvious the remixes were meant to be satires of three current dance music trends – big room hard electro, stadium house, and retro two-step. Yes, they are cheesy takes of Showtek, Zedd, and the like- but with a novelty record it fits perfectly. The video complete with twerking and animal shots should be going viral about any minute now.

SONG OF THE DAY: Breach ft Andreya Triana – “Everything You Never Had (We Had It All)”

Not what you would expect, but better than you can imagine. Breach (aka Ben Westbeech) had one of the biggest records of the summer with “Jack,” a simple yet substantial classic house track with one line of repeated vocal that was accompanied by a viral hairy video. For “We Had It All,” he moves from channeling Larry Heard to evoking classic Rollo. Dig up “Let This Be a Prayer” by Rollo Goes Spiritual with Pauline Taylor for an idea of where this is descended from. How great it is for there to be a return to vocal house with a real song – mournful, yet uplifting – as soulful singer Andreya Triana is serving Sandy B inspired by Moby’s Southern gospel phase. This is classy underground vocal house which is very well-produced and modern-feeling, with classic uplifting vibes for the old school house heads out there. How amazing would it be to be at a festival or in a big room club and the DJ dropped from hard electro or stadium and subtly brought in a quality vocal house record like this?
