SONG OF THE DAY:? Chris Malinchak – “If You Got It”

Chris Malinchak blew up seemingly out of nowhere last year when “So Good To Me” broke from the blogosphere all the way to radio- and nearly the top of the pop charts.? The uplifting, retro ’90s house record had a silky, soulful vibe helped by the samples from both the ’60s (“If This World Were Mine” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell) and ’80s (“Back to Life” by Soul II Soul). The?new single, “If You Got It,” continues the vibe with a nu-house (that’s the buzz term for the ’90s-inspired house trend) groove complimented with lyrics reworked from ’60s and ’70s Motown records (Smokey Robinson “Cruisin” and The Supremes “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me”).? The cross-pollination of the eras creates a sound that is uniquely Malinchak as there is no one else making records that sound like this.? If we were in the ’90s, the song would probably be classified as morning music even throughout the tempo is about 120 BPM. For a dubbed out clubbier take, check out the Mark Knight mix. The video also follows the surreal ‘searching for truth’ vibe of the first track – whereas “So Good To Me” was about a little girl searching for her lost giraffe – “If You Got It” shows a guy pursuing a woman who is either already dating his identical twin or himself in a ghostlike, transgressive state.? Yeah, I don’t really get it either, but it actually does fit the lyrics of the song.

SONG OF THE DAY: Kemal Golden & Reid Stefan – “Instagram It”

Instagram is the internet remix of the old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words – capture the moment and share it with the world.? A track is quite similar- create a big hook and build a track around it that will rock the dancefloor.? The duo of Kemal Golden & Reid Stefan create the perfect hashtag track, as their hook (not dissimilar to MGMT “Kids”) is a perfect 6-second length that can easily be captured on a Vine and shared.? The memorable hook is filtered, distorted, replayed, and reassembled in every way imaginable over the five-minute progressive house track.? DJs shouldn’t be surprised if this becomes another one of those tracks that people request by trying to hum it.

SONG OF THE DAY: Fathers of Sound ft Majuri – “One Kiss”

With the ’90s house revival, underground classics are popping up again for a new generation to treasure.? The Fathers of Sound mix of Pacha’s “One Kiss” is a true classic, with a full-on deep bass and groove workout for six minutes before the vocals of Debbie French/Majuri come in to heat it up even further.? A longtime Vasquez staple and still being played around the world by DJs in the know, this new mix by Federico Scavo keeps the original vibe firmly intact and adds a sprinkling of modern flavor (and a bit of Federico’s trademark bouncy groove). Also included in the package is the Classic mix by Fulvio Perniola (half of Fathers of Sound with Gianni Bini), which is a long-awaited digital version of the vinyl classic.? While the length is different (the original is?10:19?and the new one is?11:17), even the most devoted house heads would be hard pressed to hear the difference.
