SONG OF THE DAY: Le Youth ft Javeon – Feel Your Love

A new Le Youth track makes me get my trainspotter ears ready to go since his first two singles “Cool” and “Dance With Me” featured samples that were distorted beyond easy recognition.? For “Feel You Love,” he changes his modus operandi and works with an original vocal and hook which he distorts, effects, and all around messes with.? Javeon’s voice, which is also present without effects, is reminiscent of polished male R&B singers of the ’90s, which really fits the vibe of the track.? But the different effects mirrors the musical mood changes which are based in the same classic ’90s house vibe of his previous singles – but with the addition of rave flourishes, stutter edits, electro bits, and other noises which give the song a more dynamic feel.?? The overall vibe is chill yet groovy and makes you want to watch a YouTube video of Wes James in the studio and see what inspires his unique sounds.

SONG OF THE DAY: Yolanda Be Cool? – Cause I Like It

You never really know what to expect from those crazy Aussies in Yolanda Be Cool.? Best known for “We No Speak Americano,” they’ve released a string of creative singles, with the most recent being the metallic reggae/downtempo chill hybrid cover of “All That She Wants.”? For “Cause I Like It,” they catch inspiration from Le Youth, taking a vocal sample and distorting and mutating it until it is completely unrecognizable and laying it over a retro ’90s house beat.? On first listen, I kept thinking the vocal sample was from Jinny “Keep Warm” until I remembered that “that” sample was actually from Voices in the Dark “Keep It Warm.”? The tempo and mood changes in “Cause I Like It” are just as random and fun as you would expect from a Yolanda Be Cool jam, with something different happening every thirty seconds.? If their DJ Sets are half as fun as their tracks, they must give Steve Aoki a run for best cartoon characters on stage.

SONG OF THE DAY:? Motez – Promise Me EP

Last week, I wrote up three songs that essentially took lyrics from ’90s R&B songs and sampled them over a nu-House track. Not that I would call this lazy, but I find it more interesting when the vocals are effected, changed, or morphed into something new and different – like what Le Youth has done with Cassie on “Cool” or TLC on “Dance With Me.”? Rising Aussie producer Motez is set to unleash two tracks – the speed garage-inflected “Bodyrock” and the groovy piano house of “Promise Me.”? I kept listening to “Promise Me” and the lyrics sounded so familiar until it hit me that he’d taken two lines of Ashanti’s part in Nelly’s 2008 minor hit “Body On Me” – effected it to change the gender – and respliced it.? The results are quite wonderful and make for some sexy, grinding house music.? Both tracks on the EP are incredibly strong and with his string of remixes and bootlegs, I have a feeling that we are going to be hearing a lot from Motez.
