SONG OF THE DAY: Judy Torres – “Beautiful Life”

Something that is often missing from current dance music are actual songs- you know, the traditional verse, chorus, verse thing.? Status quo seems to be a massive build-up, then a dropout with a chorus or refrain before another build-up back to banging beats.? When working with the legendary freestyle singer Judy Torres, that just won’t do.?? Not to be confused with the song of the same name by Armin van Buuren/Cindy Alma, “Beautiful Life” is a beautiful pop translation of the stadium sound. The original production by Eric Rezn has a bit of the ’90s trance sound in there as well, recalling some of the best Perfecto tracks.? The synth line sounds oh so familiar, and my trainspotter brain is in overdrive trying to place it.? With a few fun “oh oh oh” chants in there as well, this is a great, uplifting end-of-night track for a commercial club (or even for dance radio). The Monikkr mix toughens it up a bit while keeping the pretty elements and the vocals as the focus. It’s definitely great to hear Judy Torres in clubland again and I hope that we don’t have to wait three years for another wonderful new song from her.

SONG OF THE DAY: Kryoman and Carlo Astuti – “Tarantella”

If the title “Tarantella” doesn’t ring a bell, as soon as you hear the hook you will recognize it.? The Tarantella is a classic Italian folk dance that’s been used many times over the years in everything from movie soundtracks to commercials. Recently, Italian producer Chicco Secci did a dreamy take back in 2010.? On the opposite side of the spectrum,? hardcore party rocker Kryoman and Carlo Astuti amp up the energy and take it full-on hard electro, sounding like a cross between R3hab and Martin Garrix.? There is definitely a novelty feel to this track and it will most likely end up being featured on the next edition of Dance Dance Revolution or WiiFit.?e.

SONG OF THE DAY: Deniz Koyu – “Ruby”?

Yes, the EDM world has been saturated with stadium/progressive house tracks that feature similar three-chord melodies and THAT big drop-out. To stand out, it takes some creativity, and when I first heard “Ruby” on a YouTube video some guy recorded at a festival, I thought Jean-Michel Jarre had redone elements of “Chronologie” for 2013.? It is really hard to describe that kind of twirling synth, when it feels like the sound is moving around in space, circling around you.? Imagine the phaser effect that DJs use, but in the hands of a musician. Deniz Koyu brings the same kind of magic to progressive/stadium house with “Ruby” that he did with big room tribal on “Tung.”
