SONG OF THE DAY (SUNDAY FUNDAY): KAPTN – La La Land

While most of the dance world is looking at the ’90s for inspiration, leave it to the White Tyrese to relive the ’00s. Using Green Velvet’s “La La Land” is absolutely brilliant because the original track was a scathing and sarcastic attack on drug abuse in clubland. Kaptn flips the song by adding a few lines to fit his party boy lothario persona, and suddenly it has the same vibe as his buzz record “Ricky Ricardo.” The first verse is about the availability of drugs and their pleasurable results, while the second focuses on an aspiring actress/model who messes up her life by doing too much, which makes it kind of disjointed when half of it is similar in theme to Tiesto’s “Wasted” and the second half is all Grandmaster Flash “The Message.” The video featuring clips from ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas’ is quite brilliant and even further blurs the intent. Regardless, it’s great to hear an underground classic get rediscovered as we look forward to the year 2024 when the 2000s house revival is scheduled to kick in.

SONG OF THE DAY: Room8 ft Electric Youth – Visions of You

Imagine someone taking the nu-House aesthetic and applying it to synth-pop. “Visions of You” isn’t inspired by ’80s synth-pop, it is ’80s synth-pop. Actually to be more specific, it is the fast tempo synth-led track that would be on a summer movie soundtrack circa 1984. Galloping basslines, fast tempo staccato beats, drum fills, and that spaced-out, unaffected vocal all fit the bill perfectly. Though it’s not a song that grabs you on first listen, it has been on my playlist all week and every time I hear it, it grows on me more and more. The video feels quite ’80s though a bit more current, maybe a 2014 take on ‘Weird Science.’

SONG OF THE DAY: Cosmic Gate and Eric Lumiere – Falling Back

Known for gorgeous, lush, and epic trance, when Cosmic Gate dropped their last single “So Get Up” it sounded like they had totally changed by going for the massive big room electro festival sound. With “Start to Feel,” they have returned to their roots with a progressive track that is both emotional and energetic, blurring the lines of progressive and pop. Vocalist Eric Lumiere (“Love Will Bring It Around” and the classic “Anthem” with Filo & Peri) sounds great and emotes a similar vibe as Matthew Koma did on the current Hardwell crossover hit “Dare You.” Watching the video, it’s great to actually see the singer featured in addition to the random european models that normally populate EDM videos. As a second taste of what’s to come from Cosmic Gate’s forthcoming album ‘Start To Feel,’ it will be interesting to see how their vocal progressive and trance tracks meld with the harder electro. Looking over the tracklist you will see collaborations with both vocalists (Emma Hewitt, Jaren, Cary Brothers) and producers (Orjan Nilsen, Jerome Isma-Ae, Khomha), so it looks like the album will have quite a diverse feel when released on June 27th.
