SONG OF THE DAY:? Lazy Jay – “On the Rocks”

Jef Martens, aka Lazy Jay, gained much notoriety for his track “Float My Boat” that Azealia Banks used for “212.”? Did you know that he also produced “Scream & Shout” for?will.i.am?and Britney Spears, or that he is also Basto (“Dance With Me” /? “Rock With You” / “Stormchaser”)? His new single “On the Rocks” is a pure WTF track because it is utterly unpredictable.? The intro has elements of trap and dubstep, leading to a big beat section.? After the male vocal sample comes fun retro ’90s techno (a la AB Logic “The Hitman”) with a slightly modern twist. Later in the track comes a moombahton break which shouldn’t work, but does so perfectly.? There are just so many elements at work here, but it really does have a similar genre-bending feel, like with “Float My Boat.”? I wonder how many of her multiple personalities Azelia could bring to a topline on this track.? Until that happens, check this out and DJs should rock it as it will get a massive crowd response.

SONG OF THE DAY: Ferry Corsten ft Jenny Wahlstrom – “Many Ways”

“Many Ways” is the Bj?rk single we’ve been waiting for a long time to hear. Seriously, when Swedish singer Jenny Wahlstrom comes in, the resemblance to Bj?rk is uncanny, with the intonation and phrasing sharing a similar angelic quirkiness. Ferry Corsten starts the track with a pretty keyboard leading to a rock-ish big beat and a double dropout before the stadium house-sounding progressive pop track fully kicks in. Although there is just a 90-second preview online, it’s easy to see how this could be a major record and possibly even follow Armin van Buuren/Trevor Guthrie’s “This is What It Feels Like” onto commercial radio.

SONG OF THE DAY: Justin Michael ft Phillip LaRue – “Young Forever”

Dance music is definitely enjoying a renaissance of strong male vocal records featuring the likes of Chris James, John Martin, and Jonny Rose. Add to that list Phillip LaRue who brings a Chris Martin (Coldplay) vibe to the “Young Forever,” the new single from Justin Michael. You probably know Justin from his singles with Kemal “Trouble” (sung by Heather Bright) and “Her World Goes On” (sung by Bruno Mars), or his releases on Armada. On “Young Forever,” Justin sets the tone with a rock-influenced dance feel and a Hi-NRG baseline that sounds like a cross between Motiv8 and Arty. The pretty intro makes it perfect for dance radio (and even commercial radio). With an extended club mix, it would make a great hands-in-the-air track to end any big room night.
