INTERVIEW: Doctor P (2013)

DJ, prankster, and label head Doctor P wears a lot of hats. Although he is not known (yet) by the mainstream, his following is huge and loyal, as evidenced by a sold out club (on a?Thursday)?in Nashville, Tennessee.? Originally released on his own Circus records, his recent EP was picked up by legendary dance label Big Beat who brought his sound to the US where it was devoured.? His track “Galaxies & Stars” is a good intro, but you really should dig further in and experience the way his creative mind takes dubstep to places it’s never really been before.

DJ Ron Slomowicz: When you made ?Galaxies & Stars,? were you trying to channel Blondie?s ?Rapture??
Doctor P: Yeah, I am a massive Blondie and KRS-One fan. I have always loved what KRS-One did with the song (on “Step into a World”), so I tried to do that and take some of the original and give it my own spin as well. I didn?t get any percentage of that track, Debbie Harry got everything and she wouldn?t back down. We were going back and forth for ages and I finally just let her have it, she wrote the melody so I suppose it?s fine.

SONG OF THE DAY: Armin van Buuren ft Cindy Alma – “Beautiful Life”

When I first got Armin’s ‘Intense’ CD,? I listened to it over and over again.? As much as I loved the first two singles “Waiting for the Night” and “This is What It Feels Like,” it was the one between them, “Beautiful Life,” that I kept going back to.? The track is a mix of progressive trance-pop with some electro flourishes – neither too aggressive nor too mellow – but a wonderful blend of both.? Cindy’s vocals float on top?and express the uplifting message that we all need to hear.? Dance music is an escape, whether you are in the club or listening to it at home – and the allusion to falling into a dream with the music guiding you is just about the perfect expression of it.? The remixes succeed by taking the vocals into new directions.? Kat Krazy’s style could best be described as ADD/EDM, and the mix of random aggressive and pretty phrases is similar to his track “See the Sun” as well as his epic mix of Good Natured “5HT.”? Mikkas brings a fusion of big beat and dubstep, while Protoculture goes main room stadium trance.? A mix for every DJ to play, and Armin might just have a second radio hit on his hand.

SONG OF THE DAY (SUNDAY FUNDAY):?? Brielle – “Catch a Star For You”

Dancey europop always works for Sunday Funday.? The best way to describe Brielle is probably as a Scandinavian cross between Inna and Alexandra Stan.? The slow to fast intro pulls you in (and would sound great on the radio) with Brielle’s polished pop voice singing like a 2013 take of Fragma.? The production sounds like a poppier version of a Calvin Harris with an insanely polished sugary feel.? The vocal chants and hooks are so catchy that you can’t help but sing-along by the time the second chorus comes in.? For a Sunday Funday singalong pop song, you can’t do much better than “Catch a Star For You.”
