SONG OF THE DAY: Royksopp and Robyn – Do It Again

Norwegian duo Royksopp and Swedish electropop singer Robyn have collaborated before on singles with each other – “None of Dem” and “The Girl and the Robot.” The title single of their forthcoming EP “Do It Again” came about after a night of clubbing, and you would imagine it started as a joke. The lyrics are a play on the repetition and predictable nature of dance tracks, but of course the lyrics could be interpreted for hooking up with an ex-lover or partaking in harmful substances. Robyn’s sweetly pop vocals soften the robotic feel of the beats, and it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that the chords and vocal effects aren’t dissimilar to “Dancing On My Own.” In its original version it is already club- (and radio) friendly, but I am guessing some out-there leftfield remixes are forthcoming. The five-track EP is set for release on May 26th and with songs like “Sayit” featuring a sexually charged robot, it will definitely be one worth buying. Watch for them on tour later this year.

SONG OF THE DAY (SUNDAY FUNDAY):? Mary Kiani – Family

Disclaimer:? It is a safe bet that whenever certain singers release a new song, that I will jump up and down and scream like a fanboy.?? That list includes (but is not limited to): Tina Cousins, Luciana, Heather Small, Kerli,? Robyn, and Mary Kiani.? So imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon “Family,” which was posted on Mary Kiani’s Soundcloud nearly 8 months ago.? Built on the theme of finding your own family, the frolicking hands-in-the-air Hi-NRG electro track is a modernized take on the classic girl-twirl with the current style of chorus breakdown.? The mathematical approach to the lyrics had me flashing back to the top 10 pop hit “3 Is Family,” by the dearly departed Dana Dawson, but a bit more open-minded without the heteronormative delineation.? The idea of building your own family of those who love you has always been a foundation of the gay world, so this song is just another reason why we queers have always embraced Mary Kiani as our beloved big-voiced Scottish diva.

SONG OF THE DAY: Frida?Sundemo – A Million Years

Written by: Ben Norman

Missing Robyn?? Cold, and in need of some warmth?? Hot, and need some chill?? Well Frida Sundemo, along with her track “A Million Years,” have got you covered.? Channeling Robyn like she’s trying to take over, Frida belts and coos “A Million Years” over a lush and complex musical composition.? Lyrically, this is more “With Every Heartbeat” than “Konichiwa Bitches,” so it lacks Robyn’s tongue-in-cheek approach to some of her best tracks.? Don’t fret dear listeners, “A Million Years” takes musical cues from classic dance tracks in its complexity, but combines it with the staunch, anthemic sounds of Bastille and his friends.? The combination is a riveting journey that pushes hard, then lets you breathe here and there just to drive harder.? The end of the track is the culmination of a 2 minute build-up that feels as if it goes nowhere, but will have you breathlessly replaying over and over.? Curiously, her music sounds a lot more feminine than Frida looks in her video, but there is much to be said by not judging a book by its cover.? If “A Million Years” is any indication, we can expect amazing things from Ms. Sundemo.? Also check out her track “For You, Love” for more evidence of how awesome she is.
