SONG OF THE DAY: Fedde Le Grand – “Rockin’ and Rollin'”

A festival monster with classic DNA… Energetic Dutchman Fedde Le Grand continues his exploration of rock and Daft Punk-ish influences from “Raw,” with the accurately titled “Rockin’ N Rollin’.” Starting off with a vibe not dissimilar to Freemasons recent “Bring It Back,” vocal samples crescendo into a full-on rock-edged shuffling beat. It’s intense, aggressive-yet-still-accessible, almost like dBerrie’s “Zenith” or Tristan Garner’s “Machine Gun” made for the masses. The vocals are effected to an extreme before the drop-down leads to a swirling synth line with the feel of Abba’s “Voulez-vous” pumped with testosterone. The massive staccato and stuttered build-up will drive any floor wild. Originally deployed at Ultra, the track will no doubt be a festival favorite all summer. The only question is which rapper will be called on for the topline, I imagine someone like Busta Rhymes would have the perfect flow.

SONG OF THE DAY:? dBerrie – “Zenith”

I’ve never been a big fan of rock music, but this current trend of bringing rock elements into electro is quite sickening.? First spotted last year with the Sharkjumper tracks (which will hopefully get released one day) and covered last week in Tristan Garner’s “Machine Gun,’? the frenetic live energy of rock melds perfectly with the aggressive electro which is dominating big rooms.? Native New Yorker dBerrie (great name) harnesses the two and adds distorted noises to the drop-out that have an eerie, almost operatic feel to them.? There is a really fresh feel to this track with everything from the complicated bass loop (with the added beats) perfectly engineered to shake things up. If this is the “new funk” sound referenced in the male vocal bit, then bring on more of it.? Getting released in mid-March, listen for this track to be dropped by the big guys all over the Winter Music Conference.

Get this on CD or download to your iTunes when it’s out in March. Have any old CDs lying around that you never listen to anymore? Recycle them by visiting www.musicmagpie.com today, and make some cash for some new tunes.

SONG OF THE DAY: Sultan + Ned Shepard vs Thomas Sagstad ft Dirty Vegas – “Somebody to Love”

You know that old phrase that “too many cooks spoil the broth,” well that’s definitely not the case with “Somebody To Love.” Since their production of “Send Me Your Love” with Taryn Manning and a remix of Tegan & Sara’s “Closer,” I’ve been going back through the catalog of duo Sultan & Ned Shepard to find gems that I might have missed. Teaming up with Norwegian electro producer Thomas Sagstad, they constructed the soulful “Somebody to Love” blending both pretty (imagine the somber anthemic feel of Alesso “Years”) and the noisy big room energy (a touch of Fedde Le Grand). The middle part with the piano breakdown is quite moving as it is elevated by the emotionally raw performance of Dirty Vegas vocalist Steve Smith. While the original mix is perfect for a set closer, DJs will want to dig up the more aggressive and electro mixes by Pari & Simo, dBerrie, and Third Party. Originally released on Harem a few months ago, Kontor has picked up the track and put together a visually pleasing lyric video which is definitely worth a view (or three).
