INTERVIEW: EDX (2013)

Swiss-born Italian DJ/Producer EDX released the gorgeous artist album ‘On the Edge” in the beginning of 2012, which spawned the massive vocal club hits “Falling Out of Love” and “This is Your Life.”? Yet along the way, he also released harder edge club tracks on Spinnin’ and Toolroom.? The dual nature of his releases show his complexity and mastery of music production.? Having produced dance music for more than twenty years, he has a wealth of experience to pull from and you can hear it in his epic and lush productions.? We caught up at the Winter Music Conference and had a nice chat about what’s been going on in his world.

SONG OF THE DAY: Vicetone ft Jonny Rose – “Stars”

At just 20 years old, it’s surprising that the Vicetone duo didn’t spin at the Outbreak Electro Freshmen 13 WMC party along with fellow rising stars Audien, Walden, etc. Following up their much buzzed about remix of “Weapon” by Cazzette, they unleash “Stars,” a primetime rock-tinged stadium/progressive electro monster featuring the prophetic vocals of Jonny Rose. You might remember Jonny from the incredible “Where Is Love (Love is Hard to Find)” that he did with Mysto & Pizzi a year ago, and with “Stars” he has a strong track to sing his heart out on. The production, both track and vocal, are quite strong and especially interesting is the R3hab-ish stabs in the energetic part. It’s not exactly chainsaw, but there’s a level of aggression not often heard in progressive tracks. Although “Stars” is released on April 1st, it’s no joke and only a fool would pass on it.

SONG OF THE DAY (SUNDAY FUNDAY): Nikki Williams – “Glowing (Remixes)”

Ask and ye shall receive.?? About two months ago, I wrote up “Glowing” as an enchanting europop song with electro beats and asked for remixes. Well, remixes by Cazzette, Danny Verde, and Fedde Le Grand surfaced and were heard all over Miami during the Winter Music Conference.? Avicii proteges Cazzette go the stadium house route, adding in some unique ’90s trance-influenced synths.? Danny Verde fuses modern tribal beats and progressive keyboards for a big room monster that will work on dance floors everywhere.? Fedde Le Grand mimics the duality of the original (pretty and hard) with euphoric, angelic energy, balance with grinding electro passages.? It’s a strong remix package that will help get Nikki Williams club play to boost the buzz from her internet buzz videoclip “Kill Fuck Marry.”? Speaking of which, remixes by Bob Sinclar and Adrian Lux of “KFM” have surfaced as well, and while they aren’t the most dancefloor-friendly, both are great interpretations of the quirky, fun love song.
