SONG OF THE DAY: Zedd ft Hayley Williams (of Paramore) – “Stay the Night” (Bimbo Jones Remix)

Unexpected.? Listening to new tracks, I came across this new banging and aggressive remix of “Stay the Night” by Zedd ft Hayley Williams and it blew me away.? “Stay the Night” is a pretty and somber stadium/progressive house track which sounds great on the radio but can be pretty difficult to play in a club setting.? The remixes have been pretty good (Tiesto, Nicky), but aside from the DJ Kue mashup with the Jacksons “Can You Feel It,” there hasn’t been one that amped the energy to primetime stomper, until now that is.? This new mix is full-on aggressive electro – touches of R3hab, Showtek, and Alesso – yet also captures the pretty chords and musicality of the original. Realizing it came from Bimbo Jones was a surprise, as it’s the most aggressive thing they’ve done since their tragically underappreciated “Questions” track from a few years back.? The track also feels Dutch and not British. It’s as if the Bimbo Jones guys have succeeded at blending the aggressive electro sounds that dominate Beatport and big rooms with their trademark commercial feel.? So yes, it’s the best of both worlds and stands out as? one of the best remixes of 2013.

(Note:? We are required to put the “of Paramore” disclaimer in the artist name because no one wants her to suffer the tragic fate of her sister Michelle and be confused with others that share the same name)

SONG OF THE DAY:?Nightstylers ft Dan Brown – “Shadows”

While I realize that being an artist is following your inspiration to make music from your soul, sometimes I wish that my favorites would go in a different direction.? Listening to the new “Shadows” track from Nightstylers ft Dan Brown, this is what I wish Depeche Mode’s new album would have sounded like.?? Take the alternative synth pop from their ’80s beginnings, mix in some of their ’90s rock exploration, and color it with their dark-yet-uplifting signature and this really does feel like it could be a Depeche Mode track (and that’s a high compliment). As a followup to “More I See,” the Nightstylers go a bit more progressive but still keep a similar vibe.? It also seems like they’ve found the perfect muse with the expressively raw vocalist Dan Brown.?? Keep your eye open for more quality releases from the British trio comprised of members of the Freestylers, Sol Brothers, and Bimbo Jones.

SONG OF THE DAY (SUNDAY FUNDAY): Dido – “End of Night (Remixes)”

I will be the first to admit that Dido is not the first artist I think of when I am reaching for a floorfilling club anthem.? Her songs tend to be more downbeat, introspective, and dare I say depressing- not really the ultimate source material for hands-in-the-air fun.? Maybe this is why her new single “End of Night” blew me away so much.? Produced and co-written by Greg Kurstin, the pop mastermind behind two of the year’s best dance pop records, Tegan and Sara’s “Closer” and Rita Ora’s “Radioactive,” the song spins Dido’s telling off of an ex-boyfriend as an ’80s-vibed nu-romantic La Roux-inspired electro track.?? What makes it even more special is that both remixes feel like modern takes of ’90s dance styles – Vince Clarke’s mix sounds like an updated DNA-ish hip-house track, while Bimbo Jones go hands-in-the-air Hi-NRG europop (imagine Motiv8 reworking Yaz’s “Don’t Go” for an idea). ?Whoever A&Red these remixes deserves kudos for one of the more interesting remix packages of the year.
