SONGS OF THE DAY (SUNDAY FUNDAY): The Perry Twins ft Cameron E Neilson “All Equal on the Dancefloor” and Dakota Green – “Club Lights”

With all this international focus on the electronic dance music movement, there seems to be a shadow placed over the roots of house and disco music. The genre got its start in the underground gay and black dance clubs, and like the “electronica” movement of the late ’90s, the term EDM might just be an acronym so that straight people feel comfortable going to clubs without a challenge to their sexuality. So it’s great to see openly gay dance artists and producers staking their claim on the music and creating quality dance songs about club life. Circuit producer/DJs The Perry Twins follow up their #1 Club chart hit “Bad Bad Boy” with “All Equal on the Dancefloor,” a song with the simple sentiment that goes to the root of clubland – it doesn’t matter who you are, when you start to dance we all come together as one. Scottish singer/songwriter Cameron E Neilson provides an emotional vocal performance that contrasts the aggressive eletro beats of the twins. Newcomer Dakota Green makes his debut with an uplifting love song about his potential love interest who shines brighter than the “Club Lights.” The song sounds radio-ready and it’s quite hard to believe that a record label hasn’t already snapped him up. The song is universal, and with the right remix could rock any mainstream dance floor. Maybe Cameron should call the Perry Twins?

SONG OF THE DAY: ATB ft Stanfour – “Face to Face”

Longevity in the dance world is quite rare.? So for ATB to continue pumping out solid club tracks more than 15 years after his classic debut “9PM?(Till I Come)”? is quite exceptional.? Preceding his forthcoming double CD ‘Contact’ comes the male vocal,rock-tinged progressive track “Face to Face.”? The vocals come courtesy of German rock band Stanfour who pine for more human contact in this increasingly distant and digital world that we live in.? The original track starts off with a sparse guitar playing, focusing on the vocal until an oddly-timed drum beat comes in and starts the production building up to the progressive pop chorus.? Comparisons to Armin’s “This is What it Feels Like” seem apropos here.? For fans (and DJ consumption), the Rudee mix, which was premiered on ASOT 648, stands out as the most anthemic and hands-in-the-air mix.? It’s not a surprise that the mix is included on the the bonus remix CD of the commercial release.? Here’s hoping that “Right Back to You,” ATB’s collab with York and Jes, follows quickly as the second single.

SONG OF THE DAY: Solidisco ft Skyy – “Top of the World”

Some disco sounds good right about now.? Buffalo NYC-based duo Solidisco have been releasing a solid stream of disco remixes and sample records over the past few years. There was that Sweet Sensation-sampling “Hooked” record (with the sick JWLS remix) and “Never Let You Go” (my trainspotter brain couldn’t clock that sample), and a really funky mix of Natali Yura’s “Scream For Love.”? For their new single “Top of the World,”? Solidisco mined the Salsoul catalog, found Skyy’s 1980 record “Here to You,” sampled one vocal line and built a funky disco track around it.? Fitting perfectly with the DJ Cassidy record we just wrote up, “TOTW” shares the low-120s BPM and that “feel good” run-to-the-dancefloor vibe.? It really is a refreshing change from all the aggressive electro that seems to be dominating clubland at the moment. Could you imagine a night where the DJ mixed in these records along with some of the ’90s Nu-house alongside some electro and stadium as well?? That sure sounds like the “Top of the World” to me.
