SONG OF THE DAY: Fresh N Cutz – “I Get High”

If you dig through crates of disco vinyl, you are going to find a lot of lost treasures that time might have forgotten. Sometimes its the job of a producer/dj, to freshen one up a bit and give it new life. Freda Payne is definitely best known for “Band of Gold” yet many of her follow up releases deserve some attention as well. Her 1976 slow jam “I Get High” can obviously be interpreted a few different ways and listening to vocals closely, they have been sampled recently in a few other club records. San Diego based producers Fresh N Cutz give the song a respectful update by injecting a bit of energy and giving it a “Love Hangover”-esque feel. There is a small bit of repeated echoed vocals and hints of electro but thankfully its done with tasteful restraint. While I am not sure whether is a bootleg/whitelabel or an official remix (though it being a free download on Soundcloud makes me think its the former), I have a feeling that someone is going to hear this track and be inspired to have it resung for a big 90s vibed NuHouse release in the next few weeks.

SONGS OF THE DAY: Gorgon City ft MNEK – “Ready For Your Love” and Clean Bandit ft Jess Glynne “Rather Be”

These two songs that originally hit the interwebs in December finally get their commercial release this week (at least in the UK.). Both are part of the ’90s flashback meme, though they channel different influences.? “Ready For Your Love” is a straightforward R&B dance song with garage elements woven nicely throughout.? While the track is good, the real star is the vocalist MNEK.? The singer has had major success producing and writing major hits for The Saturdays, Little Mix, and Duke Dumont (as well as for Kylie’s upcoming album), and listening to this song will make you look forward to more music with him as the lead vocalist.? Featuring a similarily soulful vocal, “Rather Be” is a seductively addictive piano-based house track.? For ’90s inspiration, I would say the Clean Bandit is a 2014 take on the Deep Dish/Everything But the Girl collaborations and productions, while the Gorgon City recalls the best work of the Artful Dodger.? Both of these songs are bound for major pop success in the UK, and hopefully they will make it over here to the states as well.

SONG OF THE DAY: 3Some & Eran Hersh – “Red Alert”

Sometimes a little tweak is all it needs to make something fresh.? Right now there is an inundation of tracks copying the “Epic” and “Animal” formulas, and they are kind of interchangeable with little setting them apart from each other.? Leave it to three Israeli teenagers to make their mark by bringing in a taste of classical music.? While it is doubtful that they played the violin parts themselves, the surprise of hearing the sounds at the first drop really changes everything.? Remember the first time you heard Wolfgang Gartner‘s “Fifth Symphony” and how quickly it became a buzz track.? “Red Alert” could possible go viral for that same reason.? Yes, a lot of the rest track may seem right out of DJs from Mars “Phat Ass Drop” instruction manual (i.e. the “motherf*king drop” vocal bit, and the rote buildups) – the inclusion of classical musical elements makes everything seem fresh, different, and stand out a bit. DJs can pick up the free download by liking their Facebook page.? Their forthcoming single “Sweat” is worth taking a listen to as well.
