SONG OF THE DAY: Porter Robinson – Sea of Voices

Here’s an electronic record that you can’t really dance to.? There’s been a lot of buzz over “Sea of Buzz,” the first track from Porter Robinson’s forthcoming ‘Worlds’ album, because it is completely unexpected.? Just as Avicii incorporated country music into his recent album, Porter has moved away from the electrohouse he is known for (“Spitfire,” “Vandalism,” “Language”) and created a beautiful soundscape for listening while chilling out.? There are no banging beats, massive drops, or shouting “throw your hands in the air.”? The beautiful soundscape washes over you with strings and effected backing vocals until the lead comes in with a simple melody.? Whether the rest of his album will continue in this more BT/m83 direction is unknown, but it definitely does bring a few things to mind.? The banging big room electro/festival EDM sound seems to be starting to slow down with the rise of slower-tempoed nu-house in the UK and deep house across from Europe.? This kind of chilled-out soundscape might be part of that natural evolution.? Since electronic music has been so embraced by the current generation, it only makes sense that they will want to listen to it outside of the club, and let’s face it, the majority of banging EDM tracks just don’t make sense outside of the normal environment.? Chilled-out house and mellower tracks fit that bill much more readily.? “Sea of Voices” is not what you would expect from Porter Robinson, but it’s a sign that during his time off touring to produce his album that he explored some new ideas and might be on the cusp of a major transition in the electronic music world.

SONG OF THE DAY: Robbie Rivera, Delayers, Maurizio Gubellini – Here

International mentoring – that could be a subtitle for this big room track. Delayers, the quartet of DJ/producers from San Marino, formed in 2011 and with each release their profile has grown steadily, often teaming with Italian producer Maurizio Gubellini (“In Da House,” “Conchy”). Robbie Rivera brings them all together on his label Juicy for what will no doubt be a WMC anthem later this month. The modern fusion of tribal and electro is a bit dark and has the exuberant energy that will drive both club floors and outdoor festivals. The repeated hook is familiar yet distinctive, making “Here” stand out from the other tracks of the moment.

SONG OF THE DAY (SUNDAY FUNDAY): Annie ft Bjarne Melgaard – Russian Kiss

Just the other day, I mentioned how Annie was probably getting in touch with Richard X to make some more synth-pop dance music since there is a whole ’90s revival.? If you go back a few years and listen to “Chewing Gum” or “Greatest Hit,”? you will hear how she jumped the ’90s flashback trend.??Created as a fundraising record in protest of Russian anti-gay laws, “Russian Kiss” is an updated version of Lil’ Louis’ classic “French Kiss” with new vocals and a bit more acid in the track.? The breakdown to slow sexy music (a/k/a porn groove) gradually comes in, unleashing the same primal sexual energy as the original.? This is one of the rare updates that both pays respect to the original while twisting it into a new direction that is fresh and now.?? Club DJs will want to reach for the Skatebard remix, titled “Norwegian Kiss,”? which pumps ups the energy while giving it a bit of a happy-go-lucky Deee-Lite kinda vibe. The NSFW video feels like a Benetton ad of hipsters having a kiss-in where they are really going for it.? If this doesn’t inspire you to “shake a fist for the Russian kiss,” nothing will.
