SONG OF THE DAY: Jenn D – “Lose It”

It’s always great when a song catches you by surprise. A site reader recommended that I check out “Lose It” by Jenn D. The song starts out with a jaunty dance pop vibe, and the sung and spoken response vocals are a bit catchy. A tropical vibe drumbeat becomes the focus as the vocals get more effected. The dropout bridge builds the intensity to a computerized voice saying “Are You Ready?” Then it hits – an explosive beat best described as a pop version of moombahton, a fusion of reggaeton, distortion, and dubstep. The unexpected change is really fresh and sounds unlike anything else out there right now. When played at a club, this song will ignite any commercial dance floor – it’s highly recommended for those who like pop with an edge. By the way, for all you trainspotters, if Jenn D looks familiar, that’s because she was formerly known as Vela, the brunette lead singer of Soft Toy Emergency (look up the Blondie-esque “Critical”).

SONG OF THE DAY (SUNDAY FUNDAY): Scooter – “4 AM”

Surprisingly, there hasn’t been a vocal version of the club hit “Million Voices” by Otto Knows, so leave it to the German hardcore pop stars Scooter to create one. Those guys do have a great ear for mashups and covers. Who else would have dug up the obscure italodance track “The Night” by Valerie Dore for a happy hardcore rerub? Combine the hook of “Million Voices” with the chorus of Beverly Craven’s ’90s pop hit “Promise Me” (you know, the lyrics used by Lazard for “4am” in 2002) and a rap by iconic frontman H.P Baaxter and you’ve got the recipe for Scooter’s “4 AM.” A total guilty pleasure, it’s utterly addictive and makes a fun track for club kids, pop fans, and trainspotters alike.

SONG OF THE DAY: Anakyn – “Point Blank”

Wow, the ’90s really are back. Not only are all the big name electro producers sampling old school techno, but even the big dance labels are coming back. Big Beat was relaunched a few years ago and has been bringing a reliable stream of credible EDM (Martin Solvieg, Knife Party, Skrillex) to the States. And now, Pete Tong has recently relaunched the much loved ffrr (then home to Utah Saints, Nightcrawlers, D.Mob). First up on the club-focused ffrr White series is the buzzy “Point Blank” by Anakyn. The instrumental track fits with the current wave of anthemic pretty records like “Veldt” and “Language,” yet stands out with the episodic feel of the tempo changes. DJs looking for a more aggressive take will go for Nicky Romero’s Revisit which has been buzzing since Pete dropped it as an Essential Selection on BBC Radio 1. Surely a vocal version is in the works, though I wonder if it will continue with the Star Wars theme…
