SONG OF THE DAY: Diplo ft Billy the Gent and Long Jawns – “Butters Theme”

Taken on its own as a track, “Butter’s Theme” is a quite strong mix of moombahton with Indian and hip-hop elements strung throughout. While not totally in your face, it does get quickly ingrained in your memory. The minimal vocal chants about watching booty are syncopated perfectly, and this track would work equally as well in a gentleman’s or hipster/electro club. Most of the buzz on this song, though, is coming from the video being featured on the Potato (a collaboration of Diplo, A-Trak, and Skrillex) YouTube channel. A kaleidoscopic (if not hallucinogenic) masturbatory fantasy for teenage boys, the clip features multiple girls clad in diverse fetish gear synced to each beat and phrase of the song. Imagine Terry Richardson doing a promo clip for an American Apparel or Frederick’s of Hollywood or Nylon collaboration to get the idea. The video is truly worth watching, as it’s a visual masterpiece with so very much going on at once. While I find myself drawn to heavenly hula hoop girl, there’s been much speculation as to whether the pretty blonde is really Ellie Goulding. Seeing as she used to date Skrillex, it could be a possibility, but I just can’t imagine the British songstress agreeing to be part of something like this. While an Azealia Banks version is probably forthcoming, Stella Mwangi’s flow fits the track quite well.

SONG OF THE DAY: TS7 ft Taylor Fowlis – “Heartlight”

Sometimes looking forward is looking back. Part of the appeal of classic house music was the underground and raw, unpolished feel that was captured in the original productions of the genre. Close your eyes when you are listening to “Heartlight,” and it could easily be a lost David Morales or Junior Vasquez track. Coming from the underground UK garage scene, producer TS7 stays true to his roots and adds just a touch of pop polish. Taylor’s voice is perfectly sweet, barely-processed so that it evokes the emotion of a freestyle singer – raw and real, with minimal effects for background depth. Put together, there is a beauty in the simplicity, if not the magic, of a classic house anthem. If Back to Basics is looking for a theme song for a true house night, “Heartlight” would fit the bill perfectly.

SONG OF THE DAY (SUNDAY FUNDAY): Carmen Electra ft Bill Hamel – “I Like It Loud”

Prince protege, Baywatch babe, gameshow hostess, actress, fitness coach – is there anything Carmen Electra can’t do??? Her multifaceted life translates well into “I Like It Loud,” an equally multifaceted track blending electro pop with moombahton and featuring her both singing and rapping.? Her tragically underappreciated debut album from 1993 proved she had the vocal skills and panache to bring it on, and so twenty years later her animated flow on the downbeat is a nice cross between Azealia Banks and Luciana, while dropping references to Instagram and Lana Del Rey’s pout.? Her singing voice is quite similar to Havana Brown – smooth and sexy – appealing to both the straight guys who lust after her body and the gay guys who adore the over-the-top sexiness bordering on drag.? While not the most original dance song out there, this isn’t a song that requires you to “think too much,” it’s a fun party record that would fit on Top 40 radio just as easily as it does in any club set (thanks to the nearly 340 remixes on it). ?And yes, as the title suggests, you will “like it loud.”?
