SONG OF THE DAY: Axwell – “Center of the Universe”

As much as I loved the downtempo Axwell remix of Discopolis “Falling,” I had a feeling that Axwell wasn’t going to forsake the stadium/progressive house sound that made Swedish House Mafia so big.? With “Center of the Universe,” Axwell is back to the uplifting, pretty, and anthemic with a surprisingly old school-feeling Hi-NRG production – think Almighty goes to the stadium – and you’ve got an idea.? Swedish singer Magnus Carlson, frontman of indie rock band Weeping Willows, brings a fresh, emotional take to the lyrics and when he sings the “center of the universe is you and I,” the warmth of his tone will really make you feel that you are part of the song.? With the deluge of pretty progressive tracks being released right now, “Center of the Universe” stands out as a shining star.? Helping the track will be a “groundbreaking interactive video” sponsored by Carlsberg beer for their “Where’s the Party?” campaign.? Basically, you have to launch?www.wtp13.com?in a Google Chrome browser and after you prove that you are of legal age, you click on the screen to keep the beat going.? If you don’t fancy the mashup of midway game wack-a-mole and a pervasive beer commercial, the full video will premiere?on Tuesday?the 21st.? Honestly, I am hoping someone puts the cool galactic t-shirt worn by the lead dancer on sale.?? That would be a product placement that I would gladly jump on.

SONG OF THE DAY: Frankmusik – “Chasing Shadows”

To say that I am a fan of Frankmusik is an understatement.? Just as his last single “Maps” was a return to the excellence of his debut album, his new single “Chasing Shadows” reaches new heights of magnificence.? Epic may be a term overused to describe EDM tracks, but it is hard to find another word to describe the magnificence of this track. His voice hits high notes with such beauty, perfection, and emotion that it feels like modern opera with electronic production – something like the Pet Shop Boys would have done for a theatrical score.? His writing is also as intelligent as ever- 67,000 miles an hour is the speed of the earth’s rotation – how often do you get an astronomy lesson in a pop song??? “Chasing Shadows” is not a floorfilling club anthem (though with the right remix – say Audien or tyDi – it could be), it’s a gorgeous, cinematic electronic ballad that makes us anxious to hear his forthcoming ‘Between’ album which is due next month.

SONG OF THE DAY: Francesco Rossi – “Paper Aeroplane”

Looking up information about Italian DJ/producer Francesco Rossi is a bit of a challenge as he shares the name with two famous footballer goalkeepers.? What isn’t a challenge is embracing the warmth of his new single “Paper Aeroplane.”? A summer record that is perfect for tropical vacations, the record fuses deep house, world music, and a touch of jazz with an accessible pop feel. Imagine one of the ‘Western Dream’-era Bob Sinclar records (like “Love Generation” or “World Hold On”) with a vocalist that sounds like James Blunt (instead of Steve Edwards/Gary Pine) and you got an idea of the sound.? As big as progressive, electro, and stadium tracks are at the moment, it’s really refreshing to see big guys like Afrojack, David Guetta and Tiesto supporting this subtle, yet intoxicating deep house monster.? With Pete Tong dubbing it Essential New Tune this past weekend, watch for even wider (and well-deserved) support to make this a big summer favorite.
