SONG OF THE DAY (SUNDAY FUNDAY): Ab Soto – “Keep It Movin”

After writing up “Google Google Apps Apps,” my blog mother Victoria Jent told me to check out Ab Soto.? The west coast-to-east coast transplant mashes banjee boy style with fun and energetic electro/dance/pop/hip hop.? Going through his two ‘Fag Out’ albums, it was hard to choose a favorite, but I found myself going back to “Keep It Movin.”? Over a track bouncing between modern electro, hip-house, and big beat production styles, his lyrics about recovering from a breakup is a modern take on the classic “I Will Survive.”? Although it was released last year, the energy and freshness takes the ’90s flashback meme and gives it a queer twist.? With its colorful cast of characters dancing and singing along, the video channels Deee-Lite with its groovy fabulousness, or should I say banjee realness.??Since his two albums are free for download on Bandcamp, you’ve now got the perfect soundtrack for a true Sunday Funday.

SONG OF THE DAY: Brittany Campbell ft Gomi – “House of Glass”

Where are the girls that can sang?? With this big EDM revolution we are experiencing, the focus is on producers and DJs – definitely not the singers.? While there are a few voices that regularly end up on the best dance records (Jes, Nadia Ali) where are diva vocalists at? Aside from Kimberley Locke “Feel the Love,” Deborah Cox “Leave the World Behind,” and Frenchie Davis “Love’s Got a Hold on Me,” there haven’t been big female vocal club records lately.? Welcome to the stage, miss Brittany Campbell.? Already buzzing in the NYC scene, the singer/songwriter has been called “Brooklyn’s pop princess.” While her songs vary in styles (pop, tropical, go-go, R&B)? “House of Glass” is a stadium house record with tribal undertones that features, get this, a full-on song with verses and a chorus.? What a concept!? Brittany has an amazing voice and great control, so at no point does she oversing, but instead captures the emotional effects of a complicated one night stand.? As a longtime producer for Junior Vasquez, Gomi’s influence is apparent – “House of Glass” is what a Vivian Green or Tamia remix would sound like in 2013.??? With a great music video and some incredible live performance clips online, I have a feeling we will be hearing a lot more from Brittany Campbell in the future.

SONG OF THE DAY: Annie – “Back Together”

Ask and ye shall receive.? A few weeks when I heard Annie’s voice on Ralph Myerz “Take a Look at the World,” I thought how much she has been missed since “Chewing Gum” and “Heartbeat,” and how she would be perfect to take the ’90s trend and give it her own spin with the help of Richard X. “Back Together” is all that and more.? Annie channels late ’80s and early ’90s euro dance-pop with nods to Kylie, Opus 3, and Sunscreem. Imagine a collaboration of Disclosure and Stock Aitken Waterman and you’ve got the idea. The flashback vibe continues with the video – starting with a faux dance chart countdown (can you clock the Jessie J and Girls Aloud samples) leading to Annie dancing in front of a greenscreen with a colorful raver graphic behind her. As the lead track to the A&R EP (for Annie and Richard) set for release next week, the song whets our appetite for what will no doubt be our guilty pleasure soundtrack for the summer.
