SONG OF THE DAY: Big Gigantic ft Cherub – The Night is Young

Boulder + Nashville = electro disco party anthem. That’s apparently the equation when the saxophone/drummer duo Big Gigantic teamed up with indie-funk-electro duo Cherub to create the title track for the recently-released album. Starting off with a bit of a Daft Punk-meets-Chromeo vibe, the funky disco groove builds and drops down before exploding into a big room electro track. A dubstep break midway shakes up the vibe nicely, while the effected vocals and instrumentation keep the vibe quite organic. This is the kind of track that would start the party at a dive bar or dance club with the infectious hooks and repeated lyrics, making it quite memorable. The video, shot in Mexico after a festival, captures the vibe perfectly. If you like “The Night is You,” be sure to go to their website for a free download of their album.

SONG OF THE DAY (SUNDAY FUNDAY): Master Blaster – How Old Are You 2014

Sometimes half of the fun of sharing music is learning (or trying to figure out the story behind it). When a song has a year on it, that means it’s an updated version. The original version came out in 2003 and shares the style of Scooter “The Night” – a frantic europop track sampling an Italodisco classic with a German guy randomly talking over it. Whereas “The Night” sampled the Valerie Dore song of the same name, “How Old Are You” sampled a few lines of the Miko Mission 1984 song of the same name. The new 2014 version keeps those elements in place, adding a filter over the vocals so they sound like they were lifted from a disco house track. While the beats are still pounding europop, they are kind of softened and more bouncy, though this might also be the results of the numbing effect of 2 years of listening to relentless, pounding electro. The random German guy talking is also further in the background, thankfully. What makes this a great Sunday Funday record is the video featuring two older men reliving childhood activities and games and having the time of their life. While it is unclear if they are friends or longtime companions, it radiates that warm cuddly feeling of growing old with someone you love and still finding magic in the simple things of life.

SONG OF THE DAY: Neneh Cherry ft Robyn – Out of the Black

Robyn is a huge fan of fellow Swedish singer Neneh Cherry and has mentioned her as an inspiration in interviews (and if you look closely in her video for “U Should Know Better”) you will see an NC poster in the bedroom scene.? That the two would end up collaborating is inevitable.? “Out of the Black” is a downtempo, funky track with a bit of glitch and improv-styled electro serving as the backdrop for the ladies exchanging verses and harmonizing in the chorus.? It’s a bit of a personal story and sounds like it would have fit on Robyn’s ‘Body Talk Part 2 EP.’? The remixes feel a bit random, which fits the song kinda perfectly. Joe Godard of Hot Chip transforms the track into what you would expect a Hot Chip song to sound like – downtempo DFA with a dark-yet-pop vibe.? Bouvet’s pretty retro synth-pop mix feels like what “Dancing On My Own” would have sounded like had it been on the ‘Pretty in Pink’ soundtrack.? “Out of the the Black” is from Neneh’s forthcoming ‘Blank Project,’ which achieves a unique experimental vibe by mixing genres like a multimedia tapestry.?? “Weightless” and “Dossier” are two other standouts from the album.
