SONG OF THE DAY (SUNDAY FUNDAY): Radio Killer, Francesco Diaz & Young Rebels – “Clothes Off”

Imagine if Arty was doing a progressive track based on an interpolation of LaTour’s “Blue” and Kim Carnes “Bette Davis Eyes.” Aside from a slightly over-accentuated kick drum, the first minute sounds like a big room prog track that any superstar DJ might drop in their set. Then, the vocals come in and you realize its a girly ’80s pop cover in disguise. Romanian pop stars Radio Killer created this saccharine, sweet confection with the vocal assistance of Lee Heart. Are these raw vocals full of emotional power? Well, of course not, it’s a europop song from Romania where autotune is as prevalent as oxygen. Is it a fun take on Jermaine Stewart’s ’80s classic… Of course it is. Each remix channels a different big name remixer – Afrojack (Francesco Diaz & Young Rebels), Avicii (Ton Dyson), Prok Fitch (Jeff Rock), Zedd (Fuzzy Hair & Massimo Santucci), and Otto Knows (Frankox). Overall a fun set of mixes seemingly made for Sunday Funday!

AMSTERDAM DANCE EVENT (2013): Day 2

My focus this year is to pretty much do as many interviews as possible. As well as listen for hot new music, network, and go to great parties. Last night’s Doorn party at Escape was a good time to do all three. It was also quite nice that I interviewed Sander Van Doorn today and got the chance to ask him about two hot tracks that he played.

SONG OF THE DAY: Ayah Marar – “Beg Borrow Steal”

You may not know her name, but you will definitely recognize her voice.? Ayah Marar sang (and cowrote) Calvin Harris’ most recent hit “Thinking About You.”? For the lead US single from her debut album, “Beg Borrow Steal,” Ayah creates a similar vibe with a bit more of a pop edge.? The chorus has my trainspotter brain going crazy – making me think of Fergie’s “Big Girl” as well as Bruno Mars “Just the Way You Are.”? Ayah sounds great, but if I were to make one critique it would be that the backing vocals almost cross that cheesy line.? Well, that and that my favorite remix, Looney B’s, is a dub rather than containing vocals, though the remixer gets points for the comical name and makes me wonder if it’s Lenny B in disguise.? DJs looking for a vocal mix should go right to DSC CHK mix which has all the right elements in place and works for primetime.? By the way, if you get a chance to see Ayah perform live – do it.? When she performed at Promo Only Summer Sessions, she won the crowd.? And no one else can rock a top knot cone bun like she can.
