SONG OF THE DAY: The Partysquad & MItchell Niemeyer – “#Pantsdown”

It’s hump day (feel free to use the camel voice), so here’s a mindless party record.? “#Pantsdown” was born from a DJ chat app where superstar DJs would exchange stories about gigs, with the conversation quickly devolving into their taking pictures of their pants down in front of crowds.? Dutch duo Partysquad? and DJ Mitchell Niemeyer collaborated to come up with a big room festival tune that combines equal parts of hard electro, “Animal”-ish synth hooks, and tribal beats with the vocal hook “You got me with my pants down, pants down.” It’s catchy and brilliant with its mindless simplicity.? So much so that the ever-present hashtag in the title is not even irritating as it was with #Beautiful or #ThatPower.? The video features a Sacha Baron Cohen lookalike pulling his pants down in random locations.? The video has over 300K views and with a mention by someone like Leno or Letterman (or more likely one of the Jimmies- Kimmel or Fallon), it will no doubt go viral. After seeing the posters plastered around Amsterdam for ADE, it comes to mind that the shirtless Mitchell Niemeyer would have made a better choice for the star of the video.

INTERVIEW: Havana Brown (2013)

Havana Brown is being embraced by clubland as “Flashing Lights” tops the club chart – following both “Big Banana” and “We Run the Night,” which both did the same. The Aussie DJ got her start spinning clubs, and though she was fearful of singing live, once she started she never looked back. Discovered by RedOne, who signed her to his label 2101 after recommendations from Enrique Iglesias, amongst others, her debut artist album is set for release later this year.

havana-brown-facebookDJ Ron Slomowicz: Do you ever feel more like a model than a DJ?
Havana Brown: Never

RS: Not even during the last half hour?
Havana Brown: No, why would I feel like a model?? Continue reading INTERVIEW: Havana Brown (2013)

SONG OF THE DAY: Martin Solveig and Laidback Luke – “Blow”

Teaming up the French and Dutch pranksters Martin Solveig and Laidback Luke is a match made in heaven. Both bring a sense of humor to the their performances, tracks, videos, and personae. The resulting track “Blow” is an electro jam complete with big chants, big beats, and a few familiar elements. It starts eerily, with a ’90s techno intro (is that Human Resource’s “Dominator” I hear) behind a sexy female chant while we wonder whether it’s about the mythical body spray or a penis getting erect. The signature Solveig drumbeat build-up leads to what could be described as a “Rattle”-era Bingo Players remix of Depeche Mode’s “Strangelove.” Bring on the cheers, screams, and fist pumps every time you hear “Blow,” and you’ve got a massive festival anthem. While the official video hasn’t been released, the first teaser shows Laidback Luke playing action movie star Bruce Luke (a spoof of Bruce Lee) endorsing “Blow” as a fragrant body spray. It’s a perfectly-timed and brilliant satire of all the commercial placements that are ending up in music videos. Think about how many times you’ve seen that Sony waterproof mobile phone or those Beats headphones and speakers deployed lately.
