SONG OF THE DAY: BLUE EYES – “Who Shot Me? (With Them Lazors)”

So Billy Joel went to a SciFi movie and was inspired to make some dirty trap music.? Actually, since the artist is called Blue Eyes, maybe it could be an Elton John reference… Yes, it’s a far-fetched story, but this track is so humorous and random that I can’t imagine any other way that it could have come to be.? Starting with an old school piano melody (which could have been inspired by a Billy Joel or Elton John classic), a laser sound comes in, leading to the trap beat. The expected trap elements are there (barking noises, on-beat pauses, random vocal drops, and “that” loop). ?What isn’t expected is the effected laser noise (which reads more as birds chirping), the surprisingly well-produced and integrated piano line throughout the track, and the operatic vocal bits. Adding to the humor of the track is the Calvin and Hobbes-style artwork, but there’s also the unofficial version which features Star Wars samples. It’s not often you can describe a track as sexy trap with a SciFi edge…

SONG OF THE DAY (SUNDAY?FUNDAY): Rubicon 7 – “Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock”

Inspiration can come from anywhere.? Using the line “Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock” from the TV show The Big Bang Theory, Idaho-based electro duo Rubicon 7 build an entire track around it.? Alternating an eerie, almost Nightmare on Elm Street-sounding theme track with commercial electro makes for the perfect discord.? This is one of those tracks that can easily become a cult hit as the first time I played it in my mixshow, I had people eMailing me to find out what it was.? Playing it in a club set, I saw guys holding up their phones to Shazam it.? Coming out of leftfield, who knows where this track will end up?

SONG OF THE DAY: The Chainsmokers vs Tove Lo – “Habits”

Swedish singer/songwriter Tove Lo seems primed for a major Lorde-like explosion this year.? With her strong collaboration with Seven Lions and Myon & Shane 54 as well as writing credits on songs for Lea Michele and Icona Pop, her songs have an edgy beauty that is quite reminiscent of Sia Furler.? Her song “Habits” has buzzed since the summer, and in the hands of the Chainsmokers gets an energetic electro treatment while keeping the haunting, pretty vocals as the focus over the melodic drop.? Not only are the Chainsmokers starting the year on a high note with a free download, they just might be doing for Tove Lo what Cedric Gervais did for Lana del Rey on his Grammy-nominated “Summertime Sadness” remix.
