SONG OF THE DAY: Zedd ft Hayley Williams (of Paramore) – “Stay the Night” (Bimbo Jones Remix)

Unexpected.? Listening to new tracks, I came across this new banging and aggressive remix of “Stay the Night” by Zedd ft Hayley Williams and it blew me away.? “Stay the Night” is a pretty and somber stadium/progressive house track which sounds great on the radio but can be pretty difficult to play in a club setting.? The remixes have been pretty good (Tiesto, Nicky), but aside from the DJ Kue mashup with the Jacksons “Can You Feel It,” there hasn’t been one that amped the energy to primetime stomper, until now that is.? This new mix is full-on aggressive electro – touches of R3hab, Showtek, and Alesso – yet also captures the pretty chords and musicality of the original. Realizing it came from Bimbo Jones was a surprise, as it’s the most aggressive thing they’ve done since their tragically underappreciated “Questions” track from a few years back.? The track also feels Dutch and not British. It’s as if the Bimbo Jones guys have succeeded at blending the aggressive electro sounds that dominate Beatport and big rooms with their trademark commercial feel.? So yes, it’s the best of both worlds and stands out as? one of the best remixes of 2013.

(Note:? We are required to put the “of Paramore” disclaimer in the artist name because no one wants her to suffer the tragic fate of her sister Michelle and be confused with others that share the same name)

SONG OF THE DAY: Hardwell ft Matthew Koma – “Dare You”

After reaching the top spot on the DJ Mag list, all eyes are on the 25 year-old Hardwell to see what his next release is going to be. The day before the big announcement, he premiered “Dare You” with a live performance by Matthew Koma at his own Revealed label party. Buzz started quickly, as I started getting texts about it while it was happening. It’s easy to hear why, this is a step towards a full vocal, melodic song – going further than “Apollo” or “Never Say Goodbye” to create something that will work both in the big festivals and on commercial radio. Matthew Koma’s songwriting is top-notch, and just as he laid the ground work for Zedd’s major US crossover success with “Spectrum,” his emotional performance on “Dare You” strikes the same chord. This blend of banging club track and full-on vocal might just make this the song that takes Hardwell from the top of the DJ Mag chart to the top of the pop charts around the world.

INTERVIEW: Oliver (2013)

When two guys named Oliver Goldstein and Vaughn Oliver began working together, the group name Oliver made simple, elegant sense. SInce then, the duo have taken a unique path, mixing electronic and nudisco for indie imprint Fools Gold. Listening to their tracks, their musicality is obvious – they aren’t DJs making beats, but musicians and songwriters who elevate the genre to a new level. So it comes as no surprise that they have written and produced songs with Chromeo, Katy Perry, and Bonnie McKee. We recently caught up with Oliver when they were opening for Zedd with Alex Metric in Nashville.

RS: How did the two of you meet up?
Oliver Goldstein: We met through mutual friends. Vaughn was working at a studio in Los Angeles doing some stuff for Atlantic Records, and I was also working with them as well. We were introduced during a session, in LA everyone piles into a room and writes and works together. We played some music for each other and just hit it off; we had the same influences and became friends really quickly.
