SONG OF THE DAY: Fedde Le Grand – “Rockin’ and Rollin'”

A festival monster with classic DNA… Energetic Dutchman Fedde Le Grand continues his exploration of rock and Daft Punk-ish influences from “Raw,” with the accurately titled “Rockin’ N Rollin’.” Starting off with a vibe not dissimilar to Freemasons recent “Bring It Back,” vocal samples crescendo into a full-on rock-edged shuffling beat. It’s intense, aggressive-yet-still-accessible, almost like dBerrie’s “Zenith” or Tristan Garner’s “Machine Gun” made for the masses. The vocals are effected to an extreme before the drop-down leads to a swirling synth line with the feel of Abba’s “Voulez-vous” pumped with testosterone. The massive staccato and stuttered build-up will drive any floor wild. Originally deployed at Ultra, the track will no doubt be a festival favorite all summer. The only question is which rapper will be called on for the topline, I imagine someone like Busta Rhymes would have the perfect flow.

SONG OF THE DAY: Freemasons – “Bring It Back”

2013 is going to be a big year for the Freemasons. Starting the year, “Tears,” their stadium-housed take on “Purple Rain”- featuring vocals by inimitable Katherine Ellis, created huge buzz on Soundcloud. Next up was their epic mix of Depeche Mode’s “Heaven” which is already storming the clubs. Out now is their first official release, “Bring It Back,” an updated take on the classic Freemasons sound – big room happy house with elements of “Da Funk”-era Daft Punk hooks, uplifting keyboard lines, and wildly-effected vocals. The brilliantly-executed drop-out, leading to a massive speed-up, had me flashing back to old school rave days when the DJ would drop “Thousand” by Moby and watch the candy kids try to keep up with it. Speaking of kids, the stop-motion video made by the duo featuring Legos, action figures, studio gear, and post-it notes coming to life is beyond brilliant. Along with “Butter’s Theme,” the video proves that artistic creativity trumps big budgets every time.

SONG OF THE DAY: Freemasons ft Katherine Ellis – “Tears”

The boys are back, with the fantastic Katherine Ellis performing some of the deepest, soulful singing she’s ever done on a track. “Tears,” while not clearly a cover of anything specific, does seem slightly reminiscent of “Purple Rain” by Prince. The Freemasons’ production is lush and gorgeous as usual, but their sound has taken more of a stadium feel, like they took an infusion of Avicii before recording. The end result, at least as much as can be heard in a preview, is captivating and euphoric. It’s a great start to 2013 and one we look forward to hearing in the clubs really soon.
