SONG OF THE DAY: Neneh Cherry ft Robyn – Out of the Black

Robyn is a huge fan of fellow Swedish singer Neneh Cherry and has mentioned her as an inspiration in interviews (and if you look closely in her video for “U Should Know Better”) you will see an NC poster in the bedroom scene.? That the two would end up collaborating is inevitable.? “Out of the Black” is a downtempo, funky track with a bit of glitch and improv-styled electro serving as the backdrop for the ladies exchanging verses and harmonizing in the chorus.? It’s a bit of a personal story and sounds like it would have fit on Robyn’s ‘Body Talk Part 2 EP.’? The remixes feel a bit random, which fits the song kinda perfectly. Joe Godard of Hot Chip transforms the track into what you would expect a Hot Chip song to sound like – downtempo DFA with a dark-yet-pop vibe.? Bouvet’s pretty retro synth-pop mix feels like what “Dancing On My Own” would have sounded like had it been on the ‘Pretty in Pink’ soundtrack.? “Out of the the Black” is from Neneh’s forthcoming ‘Blank Project,’ which achieves a unique experimental vibe by mixing genres like a multimedia tapestry.?? “Weightless” and “Dossier” are two other standouts from the album.

SONG OF THE DAY: Ferry Corsten ft Jes – In Your Eyes (Dirty Chips Remix)

When I go out clubbing, I love it when a DJ mixes both fresh new tracks along with a few hidden gems that they personally love.? With the deluge of new music coming out each week, it’s easy to miss something wonderful, but when you hear it in a great mix it suddenly flies to the top of your downloads to buy list.? That’s the case with “In Your Eyes” by Ferry Corsten featuring Jes. I normally don’t buy DJ-mixed compilations, but after enjoying Jes’ ‘Unleash the Beat’ for the past few months,? I decided to take the plunge and buy her Platinum Mix from iTunes.? The set is a great mix of trance, electro, and progressive which highlights both her mixing and programming skills.? Each time I listened, “In Your Eyes” just stood out and screamed at me.? Originally released in February 2012 off Ferry’s wonderful WKND album, the track is pretty, progressive, and a bit poppy with Jes’ angelic voice floating in space and beckoning you in.? The compilation features a new mix by Lebanese trio Dirty Chips which keeps the feel of the original but elevates the energy by increasing the contrast between the aggressive and the pretty.? You can definitely tell that they are influenced by the Swedish House Mafia. As this is their debut project, I will definitely be keeping my “eyes” open for more productions from the Dirty Chips.

SONG OF THE DAY: KSHMR – Megalodon

Yeah, it’s that track.? The one that everyone was trying to figure who the producer was. My money was on DVBBS & Bourgeous but it ends up being the “mysterious” KSHMR.? Not much is known about “him,” aside from his fear of vowels and love of extinct sharks, since the Instagram is private (though there are over 3000 followers with no posts) and his Facebook/Twitter accounts have just been started. Makes you think that KSHMR is probably a pseudonym, with the person to be unveiled at Spinnin’ Session in Miami (for which this song is the soundtrack of the teaser). ?Back to the track, it’s a big crowd pleaser with “Tsunami”-esque triplet rolls and a classic musical-vibed breakdown.? That may sound strange in print, but it really works as a scary and dark, yet enchanting big room track.? Keep an eye on this track as it will no doubt explode into something bigger by the time WMC gets here.
