SONG OF THE DAY: Lange – “Our Brief Time in the Sun”?

Looking forward is sometimes looking back… British producer Lange is known for creating magnificently beautiful trance records.? On first listen to “Our Brief Time in the Sun,” the emotional chords in the dropdown transport me back to the first time I heard “Follow Me” or “You Take My Breath Away,” or his mix of “Heaven Will Come” by Space Brothers ?The keyboard line is so stark that it seems to have an innocence and purity that seems to be lost in a lot of recent big room tracks.? More importantly, it doesn’t sound like the stadium house-by-numbers track that others seem to be pumping out in regular intervals. “Our Brief Time in the Sun” is one of those rare tracks that sounds classic and modern at the same time.? On its own, the trancey instrumental is memorable and makes a connection, and you are going to feel something whether you experience it on your mp3 player, or even better in a big room with hundreds of your closest friends (or fellow clubbers). One thing to consider, like the previously mentioned classics, an old school angelic topline might elevate this one to the stratosphere, making the “brief time in the sun” last all summer long.

REVIEW: Mr. Bird – ‘Bird Bird Bird’ EP

Written by Spun Counterguy

There was a minute there where some of us were celebrating electronic acid jazz?s entry into mainstream culture via commercials and film in the late ’90s/early 2000s. But soon we were lamenting the genre?s premature loss of steam, at least in the public eye. That?s not to say that good recordings along those lines aren?t still being made, as evidenced by the new release we?ve got here in front of us. British producer and prolific remixer Mr. Bird?s release Bird Bird Bird is a nice little package of 13 beat-heavy, hypnotically funky jams that returns us to those heydays of acid jazz and electronica?s merging.

SONG OF THE DAY: Nervo – “Hold On”?

These Aussie twins have had quite a busy year touring and producing.? It seems they’ve found the magical secret of collaboration – working with someone and melding their sound with their own to create something unique, and often even more magical as a result.? For example, “You’re Gonna Love Again” blended Avicii’s signature stadium sound with their upliftingly, pretty, and inspirational Oprah-esque lyrics.? Working with R3hab must have been a challenge.? R3hab is so well-known (and loved) for his signature aggressive “chainsaw” electro sound that you can usually trainspot his work within two measures.? “Hold On” is a masterful combination of the hard and the pretty, perfectly blended together.? It isn’t one of those tracks where you can say – “Oh this is the R3hab part and this is the Nervo part” – you can really sense that they were all in sync and were aiming to experiment to make something true to their influences/sounds that was also unique and different.? The results are so strong that I have a feeling that “Hold On” might be the track that crosses them over to the mainstream.
