SONG OF THE DAY: Jetski Safari ft Helen Corry – “Like A Lie”

Written by: Ben Norman

The greatest thing about music that references modern trends is the variety of ways the lyrics – and the impact – can be.? In 1999 Destiny’s Child released their hit “Bug-A-Boo” which mentioned pagers, AOL, and MCI, proving that technology trends we rely on for daily things can go away as quickly as, well, Destiny’s Child.? Meanwhile, in “Like A Lie,” Jetski Safari and, more specifically, Helen Corry put today’s popular technology trends under the microscope for a tongue-in-cheek view of dependence on things such as Twitter and hashtags, Facebook, and statuses.? She eats at home to save money to spend it on looking good for her pictures (probably selfies).? These things, coupled with the need to be seen, yield a protagonist who follows what her apps tell her to do and, when faced with the task of having a conversation with an actual person, what she says sounds fake.? “A quick update on Twitter trends”, she sings, “I don’t know what this means but let’s pretend!”? Layer this internal struggle with becoming irrelevant over a twinkling dance track and you’ve got a rather poignant piece that, ironically, won’t ever get properly discovered without the use of the technologies it scrutinizes.? So, because you’re told, love this track and share it through Twitter and Facebook.

SONG OF THE DAY (SUNDAY?FUNDAY): Jason Walker ft Bimbo Jones – “Tell It To My Heart”

Am I the only one who thinks of Taylor Dayne’s classic anthem “Tell It To My Heart” when they hear that Passenger song “Let Her Go” on the radio?? I was figuring that it was about time for someone to do a 2014 remix until I saw that Jason Walker had just finished his own version.? It truly takes a lot of balls to cover “Tell It To My Heart,” especially since Taylor has such a distinctive and strong voice- but just like he did with Kristine W’s “Sweet Mercy Me,” Jason proves that he is just the man for the job.? Jason’s voice is almost otherworldly with the way he can move from the high to low parts effortlessly.? Produced by Bimbo Jones,? Jason’s version is respectful of the original while he is able to inject a lot of emotion to give it his own fresh take.? While the Eivissa mix is quite solid,? I wonder if the Bimbo Jones guys could do a mix similar in style to their epic Zedd “Stay the Night” remix – that would truly be insane.

SONG OF THE DAY: Cassian – 8 Voices EP

Australian producer Cassian came up in conversation last week when I was chatting with a friend about progressive house.? Just as somehow in the ’90s europop started getting labelled as trance, lately a lot of stadium and commercial house is being labelled as progressive.? In searching for a good example of what progressive house is in 2014, we both landed on Cassian’s “8 Voice” EP.? While “Survivor” leans a bit on the nuHouse side, the expansive keyboards, sound effects, and throbbing groove give it a progressive feel. “The Ninth” is a bit deeper and moodier with a shuffling groove and a subtle movement through different vibes.? While on the Cassian tip, be sure to check out his solid vocal mix of Kraak & Smaak “Love Inflation” as well.
