SONG OF THE DAY: Bingo Players – “Out of My Mind”

As those of us in the US are being worked with two different vocal versions of their track “Rattle”? (Alexis Jordan’s “Acid Rain” and Far East Movement “Get Up”), ?the Bingo Players have continued releasing big room electro monsters all over Europe.? Two singles singles are popping up in the Euro countries – “Buzzcut” and “Out of My Mind.”? On “Out of My Mind,” the dirty electro beat drops down into a synth line which sounds like an ’80s track is about to come in (maybe “Cold as Ice”), but instead, a husky female vocal comes in with an original song. The keyboard line is strong and the clap brings up the energy until the frenzy kicks in but we are punked. Literally, the squelchy synth hook is so close to Ferry Corsten’s “Punk” that it feel like a sample – not that that is a bad thing, because the track is almost a classic. Overall the track is insanely strong, catchy, and will no doubt go over big on dance floors with the chance of crossover play. The video would make a great commercial if Lady Gaga decided to redesign a Viewmaster for club kids. One thing though, please, let’s stop with the masks on DJs- on Daft Punk and DJs from Mars it’s cute and ironic.? With this new breed of Cazzette and Bingo Players doing it, it seems about as fresh as using a 3 or $ in your DJ name (or using a # in your song title).

SONG OF THE DAY (SUNDAY FUNDAY): Laid Back – “White Horse” (Funkerman Remix)

One of the many things that I love about Dutch producer/DJ Funkerman is that you never quite know what’s going to come next from him.? Each release is just a bit out there, whether it brings in spaced-out disco, electro, rock, ambient, etc. – he has such a music breadth that it makes following his music all the more exciting. “White Horse” by Laid Back, released 30 years ago, is one of those dance classics that stills get played, in its original version, at parties around the world.? Often times when a classic is remixed, the result has little to do with the original. This is not the case here. “White Horse” was ahead of its time as a synth-pop record that came out right after disco was on its wane. Funkerman injects a little energy and a few new kicks, loops, and a touch of electro, but keeps most of the original elements intact and just restructured it to stretch it out and make it sound current.? The modern dropouts are there, but deployed in such a way that energy will not be killed on the dance floor- most people will probably be singing along.? This remix will definitely go down massively at any kind of party, though I wonder how the cool underground kids will react if they hear this in a set – hopefully they can realize that a sick track is a sick track no matter what its vintage.? One slight critique- at over 8 minutes in length, the remix borders on being too much of a good thing.

SONG OF THE DAY: Adapt or Die – ‘Dream Control’ EP?

The good thing about the ’90s dance music revival is that everyone seems to be finding a different inspiration.? Prince Club is doing the ’90s underground, the electro guys are incorporating rave techno loops, the pop guys are sampling europop, and here we have a brand new Aussie duo, Adapt or Die, mixing hip-house and classic techno.? Seriously, close your eyes and you can hear Adeva belting out a vocal over any of the tracks in the teaser video for the Dream Control EP.?? Adapt or Die is the team of? Tony Mitolo (member of the Swiss and touring drummer for Empire of the Sun) and Alex Gooden (a front of house/tour manager/sound engineer) for groups like Spank Rock and PNau. So basically, this duo of behind-the-scenes Aussie musicians/engineers have joined forces to recreate and reinvigorate dance music from over twenty years ago.? With their pedigree coming from some of the best indie dance acts of the past few years, there’s no doubt that the tracks are going to be quality efforts, and creatively made with a sense of quirk in the mix.? I can’t wait to get my ears on the full tracks from the Dream Control EP when it’s released next week.
