INTERVIEW: Emma Hewitt (2012)

Though she got her start making rock music as part of the band Missing Hours, Australian singer/songwriter Emma Hewitt has quickly ascended to the top of the trance world.? SONG OF THE DAY: Little Boots – “Headphones”

Between this and “Every Night I Say A Prayer”, Little Boots forthcoming 2012 album is looking to be quite a departure from the electronic stomping ground that was her first album. ?”Headphones” is Blondie by way of Lady Gaga on a disco trip, pure infectious pop in the best possible way. ?Is that a bit of Dope Smugglaz/Malcolm McLaren “Double Double Dutch” bassline we hear in there? No saccharine sweetness here, only a driving beat and an infectious chorus (in case you’re tired of “Call Me Maybe”). ?And the peep show video is just adorable, isn’t it? It’s like a modern up with people take on Madonna’s “Open Your Heart.” ?If you’ve been waiting for the next Little Boots track to love, here it is.

SONG OF THE DAY: Klaypex – “Ready to Go”

Dubstep, as a genre, has gone from innovating to kind of annoying in a rather short period of time. ?This could be due to a number of factors but the main thing in my mind is how each track typically sounds the same. ?Of course, the same could be said for house or trance but really there’s only so many wub wubs a guy can take. ?That’s what makes “Ready To Go” so engrossing. ?As a dubstep track, Klaypex forms the track around a melodic riff and vocal snippet, allowing the track to take big necessary breaths. ?It also sets the stage for an awesome video. ?And really it plays very similarly to the Weetabix commercial that used Mord Fustang’s “A New World”, in that the music drove the action in the video. ?For Klaypex though, the advent of dubstep into the world of the characters is a creepy occasion, as the children force their grandparents to listen to the music, which in turns sends them looney and eventually appears to kill them. ?While grandma is far more believable than grandpa, it’s an entertaining romp and should serve as a great introduction to Klaypex, if you haven’t heard of them before.
