SONG OF THE DAY: 2 Shoes – “Turn Me On (Turn Me Out)”

Kathy Brown’s classic acappella “Turn Me On” widely circulates among DJs and every time a new style of EDM evolves, it invariably gets a bootleg update. The most popular was the Praxis speed garage version subtitled “Turn to Sugar.” So, I was joking with a friend a few weeks ago wondering when the dirty Dutch version would come out. Enter the lovely ladies of 2 Shoes. Coming from the UK?s X-Factor, which seems so much more fun than its US version, the duo of Charley Bird (perfect name for a dance vocalist) and Lucy Texeira didn’t do so well on the show. They were eliminated by their mentor Tulisa after singing Girls Aloud?s “Something Kinda Ooooh.” For their debut single, they’ve done quite a romping cover version of “Turn Me On” complete with air horn blasts, progressive-ish breakdowns, and hands-in-the-air chorus. The Rudedog Mix stands out as the most energetic with Supasound and Jay Wainwright both going more progressive, and 7th Heaven going a little more pop. The quite campy videoclip is sure to be an instant favorite in gay clubs around the world. Modern technology is used in attempting to construct the perfect man (imagine the video for Liberty X “Being Somebody” combined with the budget of the movie ‘Weird Science.) It’s all in good fun and I look forward to hearing more fun pop dance from the duo.

SONG OF THE DAY: Larry Tee ft Charlie Le Mindu – “Charlie!”

EDM has been taking itself a bit too seriously as of late, so we can definitely use a dose of humor from electro prankster Larry Tee. Going more in a house direction, he teamed up with Haute Coiffure artist Charlie Le Mindu for a mindless yet fun track. Think 90s era bouncy house with Stretch and Vern-esque samples and a light sparkling of electro flourishes and you’ve got the gist of the track. Most of the attention will be on the viral-ready video featuring pooches styled to mimic pop culture celebrities i.e. Lady Daga, Amy Doghouse, Madogga, Rupug, La Ruff, etc. “Charlie” is good for a smile (and safe enough to send to your mother.) If you insist on something more credible from Larry Tee, check out his mix of reality TV stars Stafford Brothers’ new track with MPDC “Pressure.”

REVIEW: Emma Hewitt – ‘Burn the Sky Down’

By: Ben Norman

Trance, like all of the popular and overpopulated genres of the world, is a fickle lover. As a singer at the height of your career, your voice caresses the minds of millions of listeners through collaborations with producers on countless tracks. At the lowest point, you are forgotten, another echoed voice over a trance beat. But Aussie Emma Hewitt is far from the lowest point in her career, and rather than aiming for the heights, she is aiming to be the best possible artist she can be, trance singer or other. And if her debut single as a solo artist is any indication, Emma Hewitt’s presence will be a given.
