SONG OF THE DAY: Solidisco ft Skyy – “Top of the World”

Some disco sounds good right about now.? Buffalo NYC-based duo Solidisco have been releasing a solid stream of disco remixes and sample records over the past few years. There was that Sweet Sensation-sampling “Hooked” record (with the sick JWLS remix) and “Never Let You Go” (my trainspotter brain couldn’t clock that sample), and a really funky mix of Natali Yura’s “Scream For Love.”? For their new single “Top of the World,”? Solidisco mined the Salsoul catalog, found Skyy’s 1980 record “Here to You,” sampled one vocal line and built a funky disco track around it.? Fitting perfectly with the DJ Cassidy record we just wrote up, “TOTW” shares the low-120s BPM and that “feel good” run-to-the-dancefloor vibe.? It really is a refreshing change from all the aggressive electro that seems to be dominating clubland at the moment. Could you imagine a night where the DJ mixed in these records along with some of the ’90s Nu-house alongside some electro and stadium as well?? That sure sounds like the “Top of the World” to me.

SONG OF THE DAY: Disclosure ft Mary J Blige – “F For You”

The only thing seemingly missing from the whole Nu-House retro-’90s craze is a properly legendary diva vocal. Whereas Dajae, Barbara Tucker, Kim English, Ultra Nat?, Joi Cardwell, and many others were featured prominently on the house tracks of the day, the current house revival has for some reason not let the singer be heard. Leave it to the Grammy-nominated British duo Disclosure to go back to the foundation and enlist Mary J Blige to sing on top of their massive track “F For You.” Originally released back in June, I wrote about the track here and played it in my club sets all year (it mixes so perfectly with Breach “Jack”). The pairing is perfect and Blige’s vocals add warmth and soul, elevating the song to an even more epic level. Miss Blige recently joined the duo for a performance at New York City’s Terminal 5, and an updated video featuring her vocal contribution was just released on YouTube. Now just imagine how amazing it would be if they performed this live at the Grammys on Sunday?

SONG OF THE DAY: Ben DJ Vs Chris Williis – “Survivor”

Tunisian-born, Italian-raised Ben DJ is probably best known for the massive “Me and Myself,” which topped DJ playlists a few years. Teaming with singer/songwriter Chris Willis, the two have attained the rare achievement of constructing an empowerment anthem from a male perspective. To call it a gender-flipped version of “I Will Survive” might seem a bit hasty, but that same emotionally inspirational message is captured by both Willis’ powerful, yet controlled, vocal performance and Ben DJ’s gorgeous, emotional production. Cristian Marchi’s mix is a bit more big room-oriented with the nearly obligatory banging electro sections, yet keeps the uplifting vibe perfectly in place. “Survivor” is one of those songs that might not grab you on first listen, yet once you hear it a few times it will definitely stay in your mind.
