SONG OF THE DAY: Scissor Sisters – “Let’s Have a Kiki (Remixes)”

We already wrote about Scissors Sister’s buzz record “Let’s Have A Kiki” when the amazing VideoDrome video version started its own internet meme a few weeks ago. Responding quickly to the buzz, the label has enlisted a diverse range of producers to give it their own spin. Danny Verde serves up a tribal mix with a touch of retro rave sound effects (keeping it on trend with athe latest round of electro tracks making the rounds.) Olugbenga’s downtempo cabaret take seems perfect for a Kiki with capital (or should I say “Special”) K. The bouncey lo-fi mix by 2 Bears keeps the fun of the original and adds a rubberband beat to make it a little more dancefloor friendly. Leave it to the Almighty boys to take a camp record and energize without going completely overboard, this is probably their most commercial mix since Usher “OMG.” So basically, if times are rough, gather your friends, have your own kiki to whichever of these mixes fits your groove.

SONG OF THE DAY: Nick Fiorucci ft Shobha and Joshua J – “Back to Me”

While most of us are looking to the Dutch, Swedish, and French for the big dance pop crossover hits, maybe its time we look to the Canadians. Nick Fiorucci has been turning out quality tunes for the underground and commercial world for years – but for some reason he hasn’t ever received the international acclaim he truly deserves. “Back to Me” might change that. An of-the-moment electro track with progressive flourishes, the grooves feel familiar but aren’t exact copies of everything else out there. The synth line is catchy, and the middle dropout is quite dramatic. The vocals sung by Shobha are definitely memorable and trainspotters might even recognize a similarity to one of our personal favorites from last year – “All About Sex” by Sariah. While we could do without the rap by Joshua J, it’s not bad and will probably help for crossover radio play. DJs playing big rooms looking for a harder electro mix should check out Chriss Ortega’s Festival remix, while those who like it proggier should go for Tars. For a modern pretty Hi-NRG take, Soha’s collaboration with Nick should be foremost in your mind.

SONG OF THE DAY: Ruff Loaderz & GroovEternal – “Alive”

The funny thing about British remixers is how many different aliases they work under. The guys behind Ruff Loaderz have also been part of Soul Seekerz, JDS, Perpetual Motion, and Jochen Simms. As Ruff Loaderz they’ve produced updated takes on club classics like “Let Me Be Your Fantasy,” “Music Sounds Better With You,” and “Hold Your Head Up High” with a credible edge- as well as making strong original productions like “Anthem.” Their new track with GroovEternal, “Alive,” is reminiscent of the current Zedd track “Spectrum” in the way that it seamlessly blends many of the current EDM subgenres – electro, glitch, dubstep, and progressive, then smoothes them together into a coherent, unique sound. Their commercial spin is definitely there, yet it’s definitely cool enough for the credible big names to support. Mark Hartley’s soulful vocals are reminiscent of Seal even as they are stretched and manipulated to become another rhythmic hook on the track. Another similarity to “Spectrum” is the constant mood and vibe changes; if you don’t like one part of it, wait thirty seconds and something different will come in, almost as if ADD has gone EDM. If you prefer a more stable, non-twitchy mix, check out the Swedish House Mafia-esque take by the Beat Service.
