SONG OF THE DAY: Red Hot Chili Peppers – “Otherside” (Third Party Remix)

Something about the Red Hot Chili Peppers has inspired many an electronic music DJ/producer to remix and mash up their tracks.? “Dani California,” “Under the Bridge,” “Give It Away,” “By The Way,” and “Californication” have all had multiple versions float around and over the past few years, and several versions of an “Otherside” bootleg have made the rounds.? The RHCP’s record label, Warner Bros., heard the buzz and stepped in to commission a remix and thus the Third Party remix is now official.? Very much the cliched stadium track, it is still quite good for what it is.? Big room claps build with electro loops leading to the perfectly-timed drop to pretty much the original production and vocals.? Fifteen seconds of that, and you hear the stadium chords behind build into elevated beats as the “all I ever” vocal sample repeats.? Cue the euphoric drum fill to the progressive/stadium hook and the formula is complete. This isn’t to say that the remix is bad – it’s not – it just uses the same template that every one of these records use. It’s reminiscent of the paint-by-number Royal Gigolos cover versions from a few years back, though by having the original vocals and production as a key element of the track, it feels more special than most tracks of this ilk. This will no doubt be a massive festival record this summer and maybe even make it onto radio as well, but something tells us that this might be a sign that the end is coming to the three chord bro-house stadium sound that seems to define the EDM movement.?
